Sorry.. that wasn't too much help was it? ;D

SOS! Title: Re: URGENT: DAY OUT BY TRAIN 21-12-2009 Post by: inspector_blakey on December 21, 2009, 01:46:02 Sorry DevonTrains2008, but I don't think this has broad enough relevance to justify it being an "Across the West" topic. I'm going to move it to "The Wider Picture".

Title: Re: URGENT: DAY OUT BY TRAIN 21-12-2009 Post by: Phil on December 21, 2009, 08:52:54 A bit of an off-the-wall suggestion I know, but a day trip to Basingstoke should just about fit the bill. Direct route up from Honiton, and there's a fair bit of snow up that way. The entrance to the shopping centre is opposite the front of the station too.

On 21st December took the train from Honiton to Basingstoke about 10 am and arrived around 12 pm and upon arrival in Basingstoke found there was very little snow and that - no offense to anyone from Basingstoke - it wasn't particularly attractive. After around 5 minutes standing outside Basingstoke station discussing what to do we decided to catch the train to Reading. We were very disspointed as it started to rain as we left Basingstoke, however as we approached Reading West it began to snow! after arrival in Reading we took a Reading Buses bus to Emmer Green, where my relatives live. after about an hour we realised that we wouldn't be able to travel back to Honiton that evening as the hill into Reading was impassable - it featured on the BBC News that evening and that Reading Buses had suspended all services. The snow continued to fall until after Midnight and by morning around 15 cm had fallen - we woke to a beautiful winter wonderland! We travelled home to Exeter on the 1432 from Reading to Exeter St Davids (Paddington - Penzance service) and then changed in Exeter for a train to Feniton - what an adventure!
