Title: 2010 advance fares - massive rise?
Post by: soupowl on December 09, 2009, 23:39:59
I usually book the 17.15 train from London Paddington to Swindon. I book on the internet and pay ^20.00.  I am trying to book for January, and the cheapest train now seems to be ^34.50 at this time, and hovering the mouse over it you get a message saying the fare is only valid for trains travelling through Slough.   The normal route for the 17.15 is Reading, Didcot, Swindon.
What is going on?  Am I really going to have to pay ^14.50 more?

All Swindon trains from Paddington will pass through Slough.

Advance tickets are quota based so is not always guaranteed you will get the ^20 fare, in most cases further ahead you book more likely you are to get it cheaper.

34.50 for a London - Swindon journey slap damn in the middle of the evening peak hardly strikes me as daylight robbery.

Agreed, it shocks me that they are offering Advance tickets at this time.
