Title: Heart of Wessex Day Ranger
Post by: DevonTrains2008 on November 06, 2009, 13:05:00
Hi

I am looking for a day out using the Heart of Wessex Day Ranger and wish to travel from Honiton (one of my local stations) to Yeovil Junction, where I then plan to transfer to Yeovil Pen Mill, travel to Bristol TM and then to Swindon and return via either Bath/ Bristol to Yeovil PM and then back to Honiton via Yeovil Jn.  What the problem is, is the transfer in between Yeovil Jn and Yeovil PM.  I hear there is a shuttle bus service to town centre from Yeovil Jn and then from there it's a 5 minute walk to Pen Mill Station.

Can anyone clarify that this is indeed true?

If so, I look forward to your reply

Thanks

PS - I know that I will have to buy an off peak return Honiton - Yeovil Junction!

There are no direct buses between the two Yeovil stations. For buses from Junction to Yeovil bus station you need South West Coaches service 68 - details here (http://www.southwestcoaches.co.uk/timetablefiles/SWCoaches_Timetable68.pdf). That link provides the timetable for Mon-Sat. For Sundays you will need First Bus service 980 - details here (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/bristol/timetables/timetable.php?day=3&source_id=2&service=980&routeid=768231&operator=3&source=sp).

If memory serves it is a bit more than a five minute walk from the town centre to Pen Mill. You may be better off getting another bus. First Bus service 57/58 from the bus station stops on the station approach - details here (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/bristol/timetables/index.php?operator=3&page=8&redirect=no).

Good luck co-ordinating all your times!

....or invest in a time machine (setting it to pre-October 1966) and take the shuttle train service from Junction to Yeovil Town station!!

I have taken the bike on the train down to Yeovil a couple of times and cycled from Pen Mill into town. It's about a 5 min bike ride (so I guess at least 15 mins to walk it), but this is via a very pleasant traffic free cycle / footpath which follows the route of the old railway from Pen Mill towards Yeovil town station. The cycle way continues to follow the old rail route until its path is broken by a dual carriageway and massive Morrisons (such is progress).
