Title: Which Community?
Post by: grahame on October 04, 2009, 21:22:45
Can you place these pictures ... you will find some sort of transport connection in all of them, though not necessarily rail.  And - yes, the are all within the area that we cover.

I have what can only be described as a vague idea that picture 3 is the Claverton pumping station, on the Kennet & Avon canal ...  :-\

Yes, Chris - you're right.  Claverton pump uses water power to raise water from the river Avon to the canal which is about 40 or 50 feet above, up the hillside.   The railway between Bath and Freshford runs close by.

You are spot on ... the old platforms under a children's playground.

Just the first two to go ...

No, it isn't ... but I can see why you may think that.   I was wondering if Chris from Nailsea might have got this one, actually.

Oh, NO!  I don't believe it!!  It's bluddy Taunton again, isn't it?  :-[

It's the park we walked through, on Saturday afternoon, from the venue of the TravelWatch SouthWest meeting back to Taunton station ...  ::)

Born and bred in Taunton and I failed to spot it! Damn! It's Goodland Gardens next to the River Tone, which used to be navigable prior to the opening of the Bridgwater and Taunton canal; so there's your transport connection! And that building in the background is Debenhams....used to play hide n seek in there on a Saturday as a kid.

What I find particularly disappointing, readytostart, is that there were actually four other members of this forum on that stroll through the gardens - and not one of them tipped me off that grahame was taking that photo, behind my back!  :o ::) ;D

In all fairness I didn't notice either.

Fair enough, Ollie!  ;)

Returning to the one 'unidentified' community, though: I agree with 'bignosemac' - there's some interesting architecture there.  It rather looks to me like the sort of sheltered housing that some employers used to provide for their loyal employees or pensioners - a bit like almshouses.  However, I have no idea where it might be, so I'll endorse bignosemac's appeal for a clue, please, grahame!  ;D

Um, er, what can I say, Chris.

Clue for 2 ... let's think

They're called "railway cottages" and located close by a station that has grown in significance over the years

No ... number 1 turned out to be Taunton and number 4 is Lee on Solent ... scroll down and you'll find that there was a bit of a back-and-forth going on, but the answers are in there.   Just No. 2 remaining which is this one:

Yes, it is Bedwyn.   I'm not sure of the history of these houses but I'm fairly sure that they were put there by the old railway company for local staff; it's a while since I took the picture so the circumstances / things I saw that gave me this impression are a little fuzzy - they were certainly named "railway ... " something
