Found this incomplete work of love and effort online after trawling Wikipedia last night. Seems to have been abandoned in Sep 2005 but some here might want to download as a reference ...

With a amateur interest in industrial archaeology I have found this map very useful coupled with Google Earth in locating dismantled railways and their still extant structures.

It also reminds us that there used to be two railway lines serving Portishead - if you include the rather quaint (and very quirky) W C & P - see http://www.wcandpr.org.uk/  ;D

Though incomplete, it is great and would make a wonderful resource if finished. I note that in the SW, some of the ex-passenger-now-freight-only lines, such as Lostwithiel-Fowey Docks, are indicated as "closed" and freight-only lines like Burngullow-Parkandillack are not shown at all.  In the preserved lines category, Bodmin Road- Boscarne Jcn and the Seaton tramway are marked but not Totnes-Buckfastleigh or Paignton-Kingswear. The fledgling Helston line and the narrow-gauge Launceston railway are not shown either.

   

I would love to know what the copyright is on that ... some useful mapping.   As you say, it's light on some of the light railways and industrial stuff (but we don't know what the intent was!) ... I would love to find a more localised map to show things like:

The map's my doing! And hence why it has a Cotswold Line-influenced name. It's not abandoned, I've just unfortunately not had much time to work on it of late. There's another update covering the Pennines which I hope to post in the next couple of months. Never enough hours in the day...

I got the date from the index page of the website, you must be uploading replacements on top of the original file rather than loading a fresh document when updating. Anyway that's beside the point, it is as I said a magnificent effort and should you need any research from people here to aid it's completion I'm sure the owners and contributors of this site would be pleased to assist such a worthy project.

Well, hats off to you for embarking on such an undertaking! As I said, I think it'd be an amazing resource. It must have taken hours and hours of work.

Richard  What an excellent map. The way open and closed lines are shown is really clear.

It must be a major project, and keeping it up to date will be non-trivial either. You may wish to note that the Vale of Glamorgan and Ebbw Vale branches now carry regular passenger services, as does the Swansea District line which provides an alternative way to get from Port Talbot to Llanelli avoiding Neath and Swansea.     

Nice to see the Cuckoo Trail on, used to live in Polegate until I was about 12, used to cycle on it regularly. :)
