Title: Shorter trains on Reading to Shalford/Redhill services?
Post by: mjones on September 22, 2009, 18:42:13
A few months ago the 0820 Reading to Shalford service was changed from a three coach to two coach unit, making this service quite crowded now. Today, I got on the 1743 from Wokingham to find that was now two coach, and a conversation overheard between the guard and driver as I walked passed suggested that this was to be a long term change, to save money. This train was very crowded. Anyone know anything more about this?

I find it rather odd, especially as the recent RUS seemed to be advocating increasing the length of trains on this route...

The 0820 service is made up from the set that does the 0224 Reading to Paddington and return and so never needs more than a two car unit. This then goes down the depot when it gets back to Reading at 1020.

The only other two car unit that is booked to run is the set that comes from Gatwick at 0531 and then makes up the 0704,1004,1304 and 1604 ex Reading then the 1904 to Shalford.

All other units are booked as three car with Gatwicks being 166 and Redhill being 165 ( though these can change due to availability). if two car units are used instead then this should be shown on the website.

This may change in the new year when the turbo refurb starts.
