The pics cover a south to north journey entirely by rail (overnight stop in Aberystwyth) and Mr Seagull was at my most northerly destination...... Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: Phil Farmer on September 18, 2009, 12:18:58 No 4 - Llandudno Jt

Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: JayMac on September 19, 2009, 18:26:12 No 4 Penryn.....? I'm gonna be pedantic and say no :D Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: rogerw on September 19, 2009, 20:09:11 For accuracy - Penrhyndeudraeth
Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: JayMac on September 19, 2009, 20:34:13 For accuracy - Penrhyndeudraeth I'd've settled for Penrhyn, that's the station name serving Penrhyndeudraeth. My pedantic answer to eightf48544 is that Penryn is in Cornwall. Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: John R on September 19, 2009, 21:09:39 Ah, "penguin dandruff" as we christened the station on our recent holiday in North Wales. (Family struggled with some of the welsh place names - can't understand why myself).
Anyone know why the Ffestiniog abbreviated the name, whereas the national railway has always used the full name? Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: JayMac on September 19, 2009, 21:47:08 Ah, "penguin dandruff" as we christened the station on our recent holiday in North Wales. (Family struggled with some of the welsh place names - can't understand why myself). Anyone know why the Ffestiniog abbreviated the name, whereas the national railway has always used the full name? According to Wikipedia, 'Penrhyndeudraeth' Station on the Ffestiniog Railway was shortened to 'Penrhyn' in 1870 to avoid confusion with the Cambrian Line station at the lower end of the town. One wonders if there were ever through ticket opportunites to 'Penrhyn' from say, London. One could've ended up in Cornwall...... Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: JayMac on September 19, 2009, 21:53:59 And on the subject of Welsh place names, I have an uncle who convinced me as a child that a certain Welsh resort was pronounced 'Have-a-Stiff-Wrist' in English
Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: basset44 on September 20, 2009, 09:51:30 There used to be a bit off habit in shorting Welsh place names in particular
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch to Llanfair P G Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: readytostart on September 20, 2009, 12:14:01 There used to be a bit off habit in shorting Welsh place names in particular Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch to Llanfair P G Was it sponsored by the tea company with the chimps perchance? Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: John R on September 20, 2009, 20:57:55 Wonder how Celia or Phil would cope if the full name was used.
Digressing slightly, whilst waiting at Twywn this summer for a northbound train, the electronic departure board was showing it stopping at Butlins Penychain. Apart from the fact that I'm not sure the official station name has ever included the name of the adjacent holiday camp, it's now a Haven! Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: plymothian on September 21, 2009, 17:49:31 Isn't it a request stop too?
Anyway Llanfairpwll (or even Llanfairpwllgwyngyll) was lengthened on purpose to increase tourism. Title: Re: Picture Quiz Post by: basset44 on September 21, 2009, 20:50:22 Yep back in 1850 when the railway was being built a cobbler came up with the idea to boost the area
