Great Western Coffee Shop

Right, this is my first one of these, so please be easy on me. Basically can you tell me where these trains are. They are not at a station, so please tell me the nearest or in some cases, the line they are on will do. They are all in the FGW area, but not necessarily served by FGW. I am not sure how hard I have made these.

As an after though, could someone please also tell me which one is the odd one out, and the two reasons why.

This looks like a fun quiz - many thanks for posting it. 

I think that no. 1 is near Southampton Central, and that No. 2 is on the Snowdon Mountain Railway judging by the gradient, with a main line unit on loan  ;) .   The water/lake in the background looks like it's in the right place too

Personally, provided such 'quiz' pictures are not taken at Taunton, I'd like to think I'd have a fair chance - but these are indeed rather more difficult!  ;)

You would be right in thinking Number 1 is near Southampton Central, but it's not the nearest station.
A for 2, now that is a long way from where it actually is.

1 is on the approach to Eastleigh, taken from the Campbell Road bridge (over the weekend?)

Yes, yes, yes. Didn't even know that it was called the Campbell Road Bridge, but it sounds like you know what I was doing.

suggest the St Ives picture is between St Erth and Lelant Saltings camera pointing South.

I'd tend to agree with that, taken from the road with the estuary behind?

No, wrong, wasn't taken between St Erth and Lelant Saltings. I was actually about a mile from the nearest road.

St Ives line picture appears to be taken near 'Hawkes Point' crossing, (golf course off towards the right hand side).

It is indeed, being just down line from the crossing and on the opposite side to the golf course.

As a matter of interest what was a 159 doing at Eastleigh and  what service was it working?

It's a 158 isn't it?  Hourly Salisbury - Romsey stopper heading into the up platform loop.

I would say that 1 is Patchway ;)

I think 1 is Severn Beach and 2 may be somewhere in the arse-end of Paddington? Can't figure out 3 but it looks as if it is on a main line with high-speed through trains given the yellow notice attached to the lamp post at top right.

1 is Severn Beach, two isn't Paddington, 3 is a fairly high speed line with non stop trains.

I would estimate that the linespeed at 3. is 90 on the up and down.

Wild stab - whould I be wrong if I said that no. 2 is Clifton Downs?

No, you certainly wouldn't. It is the bridge, just up the line from Clifton Down station.

Of course! I really should have got that given the Severn Beach connection, especially since I had the luxury of 45 minutes to examine Clifton Down station in great detail one sunny morning recently when my train was cancelled...

3 is Castle Cary ;D

It is indeed Castle Cary, the clutter seen on the London bound platform.
