Title: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 26, 2009, 19:44:51 Right, this is my first one of these, so please be easy on me. Basically can you tell me where these trains are. They are not at a station, so please tell me the nearest or in some cases, the line they are on will do. They are all in the FGW area, but not necessarily served by FGW. I am not sure how hard I have made these.

Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: grahame on May 26, 2009, 19:57:43 As an after though, could someone please also tell me which one is the odd one out, and the two reasons why. This looks like a fun quiz - many thanks for posting it. I think that no. 1 is near Southampton Central, and that No. 2 is on the Snowdon Mountain Railway judging by the gradient, with a main line unit on loan ;) . The water/lake in the background looks like it's in the right place too Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 26, 2009, 19:58:56 Well, thanks very much for setting such a 'challenging' challenge, cereal_basher! :o
Personally, provided such 'quiz' pictures are not taken at Taunton, I'd like to think I'd have a fair chance - but these are indeed rather more difficult! ;) Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 26, 2009, 20:02:27 You would be right in thinking Number 1 is near Southampton Central, but it's not the nearest station.
A for 2, now that is a long way from where it actually is. Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: rogerw on May 26, 2009, 20:10:09 1 is on the approach to Eastleigh, taken from the Campbell Road bridge (over the weekend?)
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 26, 2009, 20:13:05 1 is on the approach to Eastleigh, taken from the Campbell Road bridge (over the weekend?) Yes, yes, yes. Didn't even know that it was called the Campbell Road Bridge, but it sounds like you know what I was doing.Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 26, 2009, 20:28:21 I simply offer this, to those (perhaps like me!) who 'need to get out more': http://www.trainspots.co.uk/locpage.php?ts_number=898 ;D
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: devon_metro on May 26, 2009, 22:31:42 1 Eastleigh
2. On St Ives line 3. Camborne(?) 4. Par Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 26, 2009, 22:40:27 Yes to all of them, anyone know where abouts on the St Ives line?
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: RailCornwall on May 26, 2009, 22:43:30 suggest the St Ives picture is between St Erth and Lelant Saltings camera pointing South.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: devon_metro on May 26, 2009, 22:53:07 suggest the St Ives picture is between St Erth and Lelant Saltings camera pointing South. I'd tend to agree with that, taken from the road with the estuary behind? Been there myself :D Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 26, 2009, 23:21:30 No, wrong, wasn't taken between St Erth and Lelant Saltings. I was actually about a mile from the nearest road.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: FPX on May 28, 2009, 00:35:10 St Ives line picture appears to be taken near 'Hawkes Point' crossing, (golf course off towards the right hand side).
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 28, 2009, 19:30:51 It is indeed, being just down line from the crossing and on the opposite side to the golf course.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: eightf48544 on May 29, 2009, 10:35:05 As a matter of interest what was a 159 doing at Eastleigh and what service was it working?
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: paul7575 on May 29, 2009, 12:54:35 As a matter of interest what was a 159 doing at Eastleigh and what service was it working? It's a 158 isn't it? Hourly Salisbury - Romsey stopper heading into the up platform loop. Paul Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 29, 2009, 15:55:17 It was a class 158 working from Salisbury-romsey
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 31, 2009, 13:00:26 Right, time for three more from my travels. Where are these station shots from then?

Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: inspector_blakey on May 31, 2009, 17:46:38 I think 1 is Severn Beach and 2 may be somewhere in the arse-end of Paddington? Can't figure out 3 but it looks as if it is on a main line with high-speed through trains given the yellow notice attached to the lamp post at top right.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 31, 2009, 17:51:37 1 is Severn Beach, two isn't Paddington, 3 is a fairly high speed line with non stop trains.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: devon_metro on May 31, 2009, 17:55:48 I would estimate that the linespeed at 3. is 90 on the up and down.
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: grahame on May 31, 2009, 18:22:48 Wild stab - whould I be wrong if I said that no. 2 is Clifton Downs?
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on May 31, 2009, 18:41:35 Wild stab - whould I be wrong if I said that no. 2 is Clifton Downs? No, you certainly wouldn't. It is the bridge, just up the line from Clifton Down station.Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: inspector_blakey on June 01, 2009, 11:52:57 Of course! I really should have got that given the Severn Beach connection, especially since I had the luxury of 45 minutes to examine Clifton Down station in great detail one sunny morning recently when my train was cancelled...
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: thetrout on June 01, 2009, 11:57:50 3 is Castle Cary ;D
Title: Re: A Pictorial Quiz Post by: cereal_basher on June 01, 2009, 12:49:42 It is indeed Castle Cary, the clutter seen on the London bound platform.
