Title: FGW calls removed
Post by: paul7575 on May 25, 2009, 21:03:51
I don't think it has come up elsewhere, but it looks like all the early morning calls by FGW services along the Netley Line (between Fareham and Southampton) have been withdrawn with the new timetable, however the service hasn't been speeded up at all.  I think the calls were duplicated by a closely following Southern Southampton service so possibly it has been decided if the aim is to pick up the Southampton commuter traffic, the local operator is the better choice.

Perhaps it has just taken them 18 months to realise there was over provision, as the extra SN services only started in Dec 2007?

I did see this mentioned on a FGW poster which highlighted all the main changes taking place at the May TT change.

End of an era in a way when back in the seventies Cardiff-Portsmouth services (most of which started at Bristol) used to serve most of the shacks between Salisbury-Portsmouth making it quite a long journey of 3 hours if you were travelling to Portsmouth from Bristol compared with a journey time of around 2 1/2 hours today.

I preferred the ones in the late seventies that only stopped at Salisbury between Bath and Soton. Ideal for getting a student from Cardiff to Soton and back.

Presumably with a 33 as well!
