Title: Cancelled train - options ?
Post by: moonrakerz on March 06, 2009, 12:33:29
I intend to travel to Cheltenham in a couple of weeks, using the through service from Warminster, on a "GWR trains only" ticket.
This morning I went down to the station just to see how busy that particular service was - to hear an announcement that it was cancelled !

This set me thinking: if my train is cancelled on on the day I wish to travel, where do I stand (before anyone says it - not on Platform 1 at Warminster for another two hours !)

My GWR ticket cost me ^2.65, the same journey changing at Bristol TM to XC, would cost me ^9.10. Can I travel this route on my original ticket ? or will the Inspector on the XC train make me pay the difference ? Can I get my ticket "endorsed" by GWR so that I can use XC at no additional cost ?

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

If your train is cancelled and you hold an advanced ticket, you are permitted to take the next service to your destination. If their isn't a service for another hour, then ideally FGW should provide alternative transport to your destination, where it by taxitution or busitution ;D

Whether or not it would be allowed because of a different operator is a bit of a grey area to be honest. Some TM's will allow it, other's won't and will request you pay extra fare. Which in that case, you should be able to claim it back from FGW providing that an FGW service is not available for 1 hour or more.

My advice would be to stick to the operator of the ticket as much as possible to avoid any "disagreements" ;D

That's the problem with privatisation. If it was all one company, all the routes would work together more to help people in this situation.

A friend of mine was travelling from Manchester back to Worcester. They had a ticket valid via Hereford (i.e. on Arriva, then LM/FGW), but the train was cancelled.
The Arriva services to Hereford via Shrewsbury are not that frequent. They were advised to take a Virgin train to B'ham and then back to Worcester on LM.

However, they were RPOed on the Virgin train and had to pay the best part of ^100 supplement.

They were not happy.

Next time they drove. >:(

Every hour? Hardly sparse.
