Title: Well done FGW! Post by: gpn01 on February 02, 2009, 12:38:14 Not often you'll see that as a thread title but I mean it. On a day where a light dusting of snow meant widespread cancellations of tubes and buses in London, FGW still managed to operate into Paddington on a reduced service. Bravo to all. :)
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Super Guard on February 02, 2009, 13:31:51 Funny how everyone is reporting the negative side of the railways today, with very little if any mention of FGW operating more than most ::)
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Tim on February 02, 2009, 14:00:02 Despite the problems, trying counts for an awful lot. So thanks FGW for not giving up in the way that other operators and London Buses seem to do this morning. I hope none of the traincrew get home too late cos it looks like we will need your hard work tomorrow.
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Btline on February 02, 2009, 15:04:06 The 10:15 (approx) arrival at Worcester was 89 mins late!
Not enough slack I say..... ;D Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Electric train on February 02, 2009, 15:09:18 FGW as a diesel traction operator do have less problems in the snow, 3rd rail traction run the risk of smashing shoes off and overhead can have ice on the contact wire smashing pan carbons but I do think a lot of TOC took the easy way out this morning
Well done indeed FGW staff for providing a sterling service today and we most not forget the NR maintenance staff out in the snow fixing any problems as they arise. Thought for the day ...... why oh why does the Tube network which operates basically indoors suffer from snow!!!!! Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Tim on February 02, 2009, 15:20:45 Thought for the day ...... why oh why does the Tube network which operates basically indoors suffer from snow!!!!! i suspect some of it is staff who are not motivated enough to battle into work in the snow Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Btline on February 02, 2009, 15:40:15 No. The two underground lines which are fully covered (Victoria and W&C) are running.
The others are disrupted by the 8 inches of snow! And I think TOCs cancelled peoples' trains to work to try and limit numbers in London who might be stranded! Title: Re: Well done FGW! All Tube depots are outside, its lucky that Walthamstow wasn't covered in snow otherwise the Victoria line would be suspended too. Title: Re: Well done FGW! Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: paul7575 on February 02, 2009, 22:39:18 Thought for the day ...... why oh why does the Tube network which operates basically indoors suffer from snow!!!!! Others have mentioned the depots - but IIRC there really is more mileage (about 55%) on the surface than underground... It was a bit odd to see the Waterloo & City 'closed due to adverse weather' this morning though ???. I guess the drivers (part of the Central line) couldn't get in from Leytonstone or wherever they are based... Paul Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: G.Uard on February 03, 2009, 07:50:30 All Tube depots are outside, its lucky that Walthamstow wasn't covered in snow otherwise the Victoria line would be suspended too. Just to be pedantic, the Waterloo & City is entirely underground, including its depot. However, the depot has no direct rail connection and vehicles requiring heavy maintenance are lifted to the surface by a specially adapted road crane, via a purpose built shaft. Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on February 03, 2009, 21:05:19 Indeed - and quite spectacular! See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Waterloo_and_City_crane_2006_closeup.jpg ;D
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: John R on February 03, 2009, 21:41:42 Coming back to the topic, not so well done tonight with 3 consecutive evening trains from London to Temple Meads cancelled due to problems in the Didcot area.
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on February 03, 2009, 23:00:47 Hmm. John, I do sympathise. It's obviously of no comfort to you, after your probably horrendous journey home, but services between Didcot and Swindon were announced as 'back to normal' at about 20:47 (it's just disappeared from the foot of the list of 'Live updates' on the FGW site). ::)
It does seem to have been a really bad couple of days all across the FGW area: see http://www.savethetrain.org.uk/running.php :o Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Ollie on February 03, 2009, 23:02:55 Yes Chris such a fun couple of days ;D
Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: Chris from Nailsea on February 03, 2009, 23:09:41 From which, I rather assume, Ollie, that you didn't have the good fortune of G.Uard?
Haven't I been lucky with rest days this week! ;D ;) :D ;D Title: Re: Well done FGW! Though they didn't have to go through this cumbersome procedure until Waterloo International was built, as there was a coach lift down to the W&C but its site disappeared under the new station, hence the carry-on with cranes. There's a film clip here of them using it in 1940 to remove the original US-built trains and deliver the new Southern stock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhLPiFJROSg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhLPiFJROSg) Title: Re: Well done FGW! Post by: gpn01 on February 06, 2009, 08:36:54 Well they've done it again....I have to congratulate FGW twice in a week! The trains are a bit messed up this morning with all sorts of delays but somebody had the idea of amending the 06:53 (I think) stopper from Maidenhead to just do Taplow-Slough-Paddington instead of stopping at every station. This provided a fast journey into Paddington without the major overcrowding that I believe happened on Tuesday.
Don't know who it was....but thank you! Oh, and well done to the Maidenhead staff who've been keeping the station platforms clear of snow (unlike several other stations).
