Title: Increased internet traffic levels
Post by: grahame on January 31, 2009, 21:02:39
There is some very strange Internet traffic around today - automated breakin attempts (to one of our other servers) at a rate of around 500 per hour, and rising. I suspect that the other server is not unique - I'm seeing the "coffeeshop"'s server also showing signs of increased activity too, though not the Coffeeshop domain, and also reading reports of the robot that's doing the nasty stuff from other web site admins. This is just "for you information" at the moment - and please don't worry if I have to take the server down for a few minutes.

You may like to make a note of the following URL:

Where I am maintaining a server status page.   It's on a completely different computer to the one that hosts the main forum, so it will provide you with an update even if the main server is down for maintainance.

Thanks for that information, Graham. Interesting stuff as you say!

Perhaps it's an opportune moment to once again thank you for all the time and effort you put into providing the server space, admin support and programming skills needed to make the Coffee Shop and Save the Train sites so successful.

Yes, thanks for posting that information, grahame.

And thanks, too, to IndustryInsider, for giving me an opportunity to post a similar 'vote of thanks', on behalf of the admin/moderation team here on the Coffee Shop forum, to grahame.  Generally, to the outside world, this forum runs like a well-oiled machine.  However, that is really down to the varied technical and other support that grahame provides, behind the scenes - rather more than the comparatively modest efforts of us moderators, for example!

Thanks, grahame! ;) :D ;D

I had an automatic login attack that averaged 5000 attempts per hour and lasted almost 6 hours on 30 January.

A 'modest' effort that is also much appreciated, Chris. Thanks to the mods too...  ;)

It's my pleasure to do the admin things. Typically not very much on a day by day basis, but occasionally peaks when something's going on, and that always seems to happen at the worst possible time. I couldn't do my little bit without the support of the moderator team - I've a huge respect for each and every one of them, and want to add my public vote of thanks.
