Post by: Electric train on December 29, 2008, 21:21:49
I was out and about on my travels today a took these photos of a station on the FGW network, both are at the same station.  I have cropped them down to make it not so easy

I noticed that ... then decided that it's probably the effect of a steep drop followed by a less steep one in a zoomed picture.   I also noticed the very wide bridge arch - formerly double track?   But as to where it is, I don't know!

Quite right its due to the zoom, the line has never been double, apart from passing loops at some stations, it was howevera  broad gauge line

Is it near London (evidence of DOO).

I had a feeling that it might be Shiplake on the Henley branch, but obviously not as although that line was originally broad gauge, it was doubled in the 1890s, before being singled again in 1961.

The station was opened in 1937 at the site of North Town level crossing, the crossing keeper had a small ground frame which locked the crossing gates and controlled a distant signal in each direction it did not have any block instruments but did have a repeater bell, the crossing keeper also sold tickets from his small wooden hut.   The platform surface was old timber sleepers supported on pre cast concrete frames with a timber waiting room on the side of the platform.  The current platform and ticket office were built in the mid 1980's.

It is indeed Furze Platt
