Title: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 11:42:52 Does anyone else suffer from Dell Computer advertising pop ups when using the National Rail website? Today it seems to be happening with almost every other click.
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 28, 2008, 11:47:50 Yes, I have the same problem. I am on tabbed browsing, and have the departures board for Maidenhead up as I am getting the train soon. Even when I am on a different tab, that advert is appearing every few seconds.. Think there might be a problem with their site?
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 11:50:26 Thanks - at least it's not just my PC!
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 28, 2008, 12:26:56 I just came back to my Pc after about half hour and there were fifteen such adverts all stacked up! nice... :D
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 12:49:26 Is there anything more likely to make you NOT want to buy a Dell Computer?
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Phil on December 28, 2008, 13:39:28 I'd recommend downloading a decent popup blocker. Tucows is the best place to search for one.
I'd also suggest some anti-spyware software might be useful as well - everyone has their favourites, but to my mind the best of the free ones (and not just because of the nostalgic rail related name!) is Spybot S&D http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138 I don't normally visit it as I'm a National Express East Coast aficionado myself, but I've looked at the National Rail site a couple of times this morning as a result of this posting and haven't been popped up at so far... fingers crossed.... Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 13:47:17 Thanks for the advice Phil.
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: smokey on December 28, 2008, 14:13:05 I've got Pop up blocker which can be turned off, even with it off, I don't have any Pop Up's occuring on the Natinal Rail Web site, would suggest you go into your PC control and delete Cookies.

Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Steve44 on December 28, 2008, 18:06:32 i had wondered why i kept hearing my pop up blocker clicking every time i went to a new page.. this explains it ! :D
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Ollie on December 28, 2008, 18:25:25 It's disappointing that something that is allegedly funded by ATOC needs so many advertisements.
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 19:09:11 I agree, especially pop ups, which are a particularly irritating method of trying to peddle your wares.
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 28, 2008, 21:20:36 ..but why today...? This doesn't usually happen to me on this National Rail website, or not recently anyway....?
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Ollie on December 28, 2008, 21:21:50 Can't explain the masses of them, but it has had these pop ups for a while, sometimes they even get through a pop up blocker which is rather annoying.
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 28, 2008, 21:53:36 Thanks Ollie,
I have emailed National rail website the following... "Hello, Every time I click on something on your web site today, I get a pop up advertising dell computers.. I didn't want to buy one first time round, and certainly not after the 50th time either.. This doesn't usually happen on your web site.. Is it a problem with it? I hope it's not an enhancement? Thank you Jo" Will let you know the reply... Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 28, 2008, 22:00:10 I've done something similar, (albeit not quite so witty) but I'm not holding my breath for a response.

Well I've never been described as witty before.. Thank you! ;D And yes, I'm also not holding out for a response any time soon! Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Ollie on December 28, 2008, 22:33:06 Particularly like that you ask if it's an enhancement ;D
Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Btline on December 28, 2008, 23:43:40 I have a mac with safari and I haven't had the pop up.
Probably because Safari has its own pop up blocker included. Download it for PC and Mac @ Apple.com Title: Re: national rail website Post by: 6 OF 2 redundant adjunct of unimatrix 01 on December 29, 2008, 00:58:23 I have a mac with safari and I haven't had the pop up. Probably because Safari has its own pop up blocker included. Download it for PC and Mac @ Apple.com i second that i never use ie i always belived that security wise it was flawed as proved recently firefox is my prefered browser but i have used safari the only reason i dont use it more is that silverlight doesnt work that well with it Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 29, 2008, 11:51:11 I got a very speedy reply...
"Thank you for your eMail regarding advertising on the National Rail Enquiries website. Our site is currently experiencing technical difficulties which is causing the pop-under advertisements to continually appear on top of our page. Our Technical Team are currently working to rectify this and normal Service will be resumed as soon as possible. Once again please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused and I trust that this matter will shortly be resolved." ;D Title: Re: national rail website Post by: Ollie on December 29, 2008, 12:31:23 I must say I am impressed with the quick response.
Glad the situation is being looked into. Title: Re: national rail website Post by: John R on December 29, 2008, 12:43:29 I got the same message. I presume by "normal service" they mean the normal irritating pop-ups (unders?), but without every click resulting in one.
It seemed to have calmed down by yesterday afternoon, so I presume they had already sorted it. Title: Re: national rail website Post by: johoare on December 30, 2008, 11:12:14 Hmm, I just managed to get a total of 29 "pop-ups" whilst I was on National Rail web site, so not totally sorted. However they do seem to pop up and then immediately sit in the back ground now rather than actually popping up and staying there! Which is an improvement. :)
