Title: 'Don't let a rumour shut down Bristol club' - GWRSA at Bristol Temple Meads
Post by: Chris from Nailsea on December 09, 2008, 21:08:30
From the Bristol Evening Post:

Quote
A social club that has been running for more than 50 years is worried it might lose members after rumours started circulating that it could be closing down.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) Staff Association club is based next to Temple Meads station and was originally formed for rail workers and their families.  Although still a members-only social club, now anyone can join and make use of the facilities.

Cliff Davidge, 78, of Broomhill, is the club secretary and one of the founder members.  A retired train driver who started his career in the days of steam, he said he was mystified by the rumours spreading about the future of the club.  He is now keen to quash them before they threaten the organisation.

I'm rather sorry to have to resurrect this old topic, but sadly this has now become more than a rumour.

The doors to the club were securely padlocked from the outside this morning, with official receiver type notices announcing the closure of the club 'with effect from 24:00 tonight' (the actual effective date was obscured) and that anyone wishing to collect personal effects should telephone a Bristol number.

RIP GWRSA.  :(

I also walked past it this morning, saw the notice and wondered how long it had been closed. Obviously not that long.

Used to pop in once in a while in the mid to late 1990's as a guest of a BR/GWT employee. Sad to hear it's folded.

More used to the GWRSA in Taunton. Many a Saturday night in there playing bingo and hoping to win the big budgie in the meat raffle!

Real shame, there used to be BRSA's all over the UK, the members handbook was a godsend locating a cheap pint and a bite to eat when traveling around

Just for the record, I checked again today, in more detail: the effective date of the closure notice was 24:00 on Saturday 29 May 2010.
