Title: Wi-fi on trains
Post by: Zoe on December 04, 2008, 19:28:19
On the HST showcase site at http://www.firsthstshowcase.co.uk/gallery.php?type=&offset=-1 it said the wi-fi was going to be installed on HSTs.  Is this still planned?

It is still planned Zoe!

I do know for sure that all FGW buffet cars are going under refurbishment again next year, so I do presume that all other carriages will have Wi-fi installed whilst this refurbishment is undertaken.

i think FGW have been exploring what type of system to use and have been monitoring other tocs who are trialling it to see how reliable it is.

the buffet cars (well most of them) have been refurbed in the past 18 months so does anyone know why they are getting done again next year?

I understand FGW is now reconsidering whether WiFi is a worthwhile investment as the technology has moved on since the idea first arose.

In recent years there has been a big increase in the number of people using portable internet enabled devices, siuch as Blackberrys and most business types noe seem to have laptops with Aircard or USB mobile broadband...the days of WiFi may be limited

The business market isn't the only market for it though. If travelling from London - penzance, a laptop with those fancy pull down tables and wifi is perfect!

There is also the issue of coverage for using the cell phone networks, I find it quite poor if you are going to the west via the Berks and Hants.  Wi-fi would not have this issue as it would use satellite.
