Title: Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta Alterations (10/09/2008-13/09/2008)
Post by: Lee on August 20, 2008, 21:41:22
FGW has drawn up a special timetable for the four-day event, but trains will not be stopping at Penryn, Penmere and Perranwell during the daytime, and due to the short length of the platform at Falmouth Town, the longer trains provided cannot stop at all (links below.)

First Great Western said it expects trains to be at full capacity on leaving Truro and so would not be able to pick up more passengers on route to Falmouth. And even though they are putting on additional services from September 10-13, the turnaround will be short at either end and therefore there was not time to stop at other stations.

Quote from: Penryn mayor Mary May
"I really think they should do something about it, but I'm not sure what they can now at the 11th hour.

"We shouldn't just be catering for visitors from Truro."

Quote from: Joke Snel, Carrick tourism assistant
"Both the regatta organising committee and the maritime line forum have repeatedly expressed concern at the arrangement and requested that alternative transport from these stations be provided.

"We have also asked for the service around 7.30pm-8pm to stop at all stations and for later trains on Friday (when there are fireworks at 9.30pm) and Saturday."

"First Great Western said they would consider these requests. However their timetable shows that our concerns had not been addressed."

Quote from: FGW
"It is simple logic; the trains could stop, but are not able to pick anyone up because they are full.

"We apologise to anyone who may be affected by this.

"What we have done is to keep the 9.30am and 4.30pm trains to cater for commuters and school traffic."

This was all over BBC Cornwall today, with many slating FGW for their decision. It seems like FGW are only interested in tourism and not the local population who keep the line going throughout the year. Most commuters want to go/from Truro to/from Penryn and Falmouth Town, and not Falmouth Docks.

A question for FM's:

Why can't two trains be used on the Maritime Line (before Penryn loop completed) by utilising a short section of the freight track that leads to Falmouth Docks (i.e as a 'passing loop'). It is not a perfect solution, but could help.
