Title: How much to upgrade to first class?
Post by: johoare on July 20, 2008, 17:35:14
I was just wondering if anyone knows how much (or vaguely how much) it would cost me to travel first class Maidenhead to Paddington (and back) by upgrading my annual season ticket (which is also Maidenhead to London all zones) for a day.. I can't obviously find any information about this on FGW website.. I've a busy week coming up and will need a seat on the train so I can use my lap top...

Thank you  :)

Not sure how much, but your request sums up the failures of the UK rail network.

Have to buy first class to guarantee a seat!

it's usually* worked out as the difference between peak standard price and peak first and you just pay the difference

well yes, exactly.. And not sure that first class will absolutely definitely guarantee a seat on a turbo.. We'll see...

Thanks Ollie, I wondered if that might be the case. I found the price of a first class peak ticket on FGW website so that gives me some idea.. I think it's going to be about ^15 (return) to upgrade... I'll see if I'm right tomorrow..

It's not officially permitted to upgrade a season to a first class return, but needless to say it's the difference between a SOR and a FOR (or SDR and FDR).

SDR is ^17.00, FDR is ^32.40 so ^15.40.

Indeed, the Conditions of Carriage imply that you can only get a first class single:

Quote from: National Rail Conditions of Carriage
39 [...]
If you have a standard class Season Ticket, you may only travel in first class accommodation (which includes occupying seats or standing in any part of the carriage) if:
  • (a) the difference between the full single fare for first class accommodation and the full single fare for standard class accommodation has been paid before your journey starts;
  • (b) any other relevant supplement set out in the notices and other publications of the Train Companies has been paid before your journey starts;
  • (c) notices are displayed allowing passengers with standard class tickets to use first class accommodation; or
  • (d) on-train ticket staff have given you permission.

Ironically, doing it that way is cheaper.

SDS is ^9.30 and a FDS is ^16.20 - difference ^6.90 if my Maths is correct... double that ^13.80.

At a guess it's probably PEAK STD Travelcard to PEAK 1ST Travelcard, but I don't know prices off the top of me head :)

That would make sense (and does work out, but it's a return!), but it's cheaper to upgrade through to London Paddington and it's allowed too ... surely?

The ticket they gave me did say Travelcard on it.. Also they entered the details of my season ticket (or photo card, not sure which) into their machine before issuing me my upgrade ticket..

Most likely the ticket number, and origin and destination.
