Bungling bus bosses have admitted jumping the gun by publishing details of fare increases before they had been rubber-stamped ^ only to backtrack when the Echo intervened. Red-faced officials at Stagecoach Devon say details of a huge hike in fares ^ almost 40 per cent on some tickets ^ were ^accidentally^ made public before any final decision was made.

The company published the new fare structure on its website and many passengers were made aware of the increases, which were due to be implemented at the end of the month. And it was only after the Echo tackled bosses at Stagecoach last week about the planned increases on their Megarider Gold and one-day Explorer tickets that the company vowed to look again at the hike.

But in an extraordinary U-turn, the company has issued a statement claiming news of the potential fare increases ^became public before any final decision had been taken^. And it says reasons for the sudden review is in response to ^public concern^.
