I noticed that as I was preparing the quiz ... but didn't have enough to do a "life and travels of 150 246" quiz. Most memorable use of Kemble station: during a cold spell, temperatures down to minus 18 a few nights, the army turning out of the barracks at South Cerney kitted out in thorougly appropriate snowshoes, and at a different workplace, a colleague appearing at the laundry door, and as they stepped across the threshold, frosty haired, into the warmth, in just a few seconds, 30 years fell from their apparent age: a goosebumps moment. I wish I'd had a pair of snowshoes for the hour or so evening walk to Kemble, a mile or so of which being on a slightly exposed road that had filled with snow between the banks and was impassible, so, out into the fields and parallel to the road making the best crossing of the occasional hedge as I could, they were less of an obstacle than the snow-filled road. Arriving at the station, the trains running sort-of-ok, even though that terrible 9 mile single track section to Swindon wasn't helping. The one I was headed for was an HST, which helped, but even it had snow in odd places, not all of it outside the carriages. Mark *Railcards about which I wrote a letter to BR, pointing out that they had a missing demographic on their trains, and trains on the line from Gloucester were carrying around enough fresh air in the gathering recession to make it worth pulling in additional regular customers off the frankly unpleasant A419/M4. Their reply was to the effect "Yes, yes, child, come back when you're sixty" For me, the year or seven of the lovely 'Annual season ticket holder's nominated person's second railcard' that might or might not have had something to do with Chris Green was then a thing of the future. Kemble is a really interesting case of a station quite outsized for the limited population in walking distance. *snip** **Electric-assist bikes enter the chat** Given the 5 mile separation, even though Cirencester's tiny (~20,000), a Cirencester to Kemble station good quality 4 metre width off road route is a no-brainer - reusing the branch would involve getting creative at the Cirencester end of things, given the encroachment of industrial estates and a couple of not-so-minor road flat crossings. On the plus side, the missing A429 bridge site is ideal for a replacement at height, and a couple of other of the line's structures are strikingly well built, are early examples of GWR masonry work and also deserving of listing. A Cirencester-Kemble route is the sort of thing that should be funded by a levy of what would be small change from the extensive gravel extraction that's within a stone's throw there and which has utterly changed the landscape beyond recognition. Also... *glares at Tetbury*... population ~6500 and growing, and c.8 miles from Kemble.
