Title: the likely lads series at Doncaster train station? Post by: infoman on October 19, 2024, 10:39:24 Was watching a repeat of what ever happened to the likely lads, hoping to see some old rail footage.
They both got off at "Doncaster" I couldn't make out if it was Doncaster as the filming was done at night time. On arrival at "Newcastle" it could have been but again no clear indication it was Newcastle Thoughts any one if it was actually Doncaster/Newcastle? Where can we look to watch the repeat and form our own view to answer you? Is there a URL or other source (date, channel) to help us? Title: Re: the likely lads series at Doncaster train station? Post by: paul7575 on October 19, 2024, 20:26:05 The station scene in “Strangers on a Train”, where Bob and Terry are on and off the train was definitely filmed at Newcastle, it was one of the longer east end bays that have long since been closed, it became a carpark when the Metro took over the local routes. (It might have been P4 in the 1970s numbering, but that’s difficult for me to check.)
The platform building seen at about 20m 40s, and again at about 27m, is still there though, and can be seen on Google street view if you look around the furthest east end of the main concourse. There’s also a shot of a “Doncaster” platform sign with the Newcastle Central curved roof in the background, at about 21m 20s, the light fittings are the type used at Central back then. https://youtu.be/9HTOdm8757Y?si=_rhb9eNrZr2NDR9w Paul Title: Re: the likely lads series at Doncaster train station? I think the original black and white TV series in the mid sixties was almost all studio set and filmed in London, but I think they did use a number of real northeast outdoor locations in the 73/74 follow-up. I know the film version had location filming as there's a story about how ungracious James Bolam was about being back in the north east and wanting to go home to Fulham. I know there were some location shoots for the "Whatever happened..." but wasn't sure if the actors were actually on location. Of course this is all going on near 40 year old conversations with people who worked on assorted programmes from the 60s and 70s wanting to impress the new person so I wouldn't be able to say either way with any certainty.
