Title: Scammers use fake accounts to trick GWR customers
Post by: johnneyw on August 28, 2024, 17:37:13
From the Beeb today:

27 August 2024
A train company has warned customers about a scam attempting to trick them into giving over their personal details.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said accounts had been created on X, formerly Twitter, falsely claiming to belong to GWR managers.

It said the people running the accounts contacted GWR customers requesting personal information from them.

The firm reminded customers not to provide personal details to anyone except GWR's official account.

It said GWR staff only asked for information via direct messages on the site.

GWR runs trains from London to the South West, the West, West Midlands and Wales.

EasyJet, Ryanair any company with a presence on social media is being impersonated to try and scam people. I know it’s easy to say but you’ve just got to be so careful before handing out any personal details.

It doesn't help that Twitter's staffing levels are nothing like they were, the platform lacks the resources to quickly administer accounts, moderate etc.

I used to report blatant scammers on Facebook but every time got an automated report saying it was looked into and doesn’t go against Facebook community standards so they are doing nothing. I don’t bother anymore.

Basically social media is an absolute cesspit. I could easily live without them.

I do live without social media.

I think I might be on Facebook, but that was from so many years ago that I've forgotten.

I'm still on LinkedIn, but now I've retired I'm considering closing that.
