Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: eightonedee on May 07, 2024, 16:58:42 I hope this is not where you end up if you want to visit the Gents at Temple Meads at the moment......
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Western Pathfinder on May 07, 2024, 18:48:33 Over the road from the incline at TM in the stairwell that used to connect to the now removed footbridge and moving stairway?..

Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: johnneyw on May 08, 2024, 10:19:02 I'm thinking it's somewhere in the catacombs beneath Temple Meads but how even RS would have gained access to there baffles me.

It is indeed ‘beneath Temple Meads’, but no special privileges were required… Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: johnneyw on May 08, 2024, 12:04:23 Ah, have the works for the new entrance revealed this to public view?
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 08, 2024, 13:56:41 Ah, have the works for the new entrance revealed this to public view? I think you could always see it, if you knew where to look… Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: johnneyw on May 08, 2024, 21:53:05 Hmmm, I'm confined to a well known lodge accommodation based gated community near a popular lion enclosure. I'll have to properly investigate this at the weekend.
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: froome on May 08, 2024, 22:36:51 For a few years I worked for the post office based at the sorting office by Temple Meads, and on several occasions did shifts which included working on the platform at Temple Meads when the mail train arrived. I can't remember now what the staircase looked like that led us to the platform (we probably used the lift to get there but there would have been a staircase) so am wondering whether this was it, as it certainly looks bleak enough to be!
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 09, 2024, 09:44:08 It isn’t part of the mail conveyor complex. I agree it looks bleak, but that probably wasn’t always the case!
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: johnneyw on May 09, 2024, 15:49:10 I agree it looks bleak, but that probably wasn’t always the case! This makes me wonder if I've been thinking about the wrong structure and if it's actually part of the old Brunel building undercroft. The problem still remains with me as to precisely where it is viewable from. Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 09, 2024, 19:48:01 Definitely getting a whole lot warmer..!
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 09, 2024, 22:12:20 Of course! It's the stairs up to Platform 14. ::)
Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 09, 2024, 22:29:16 Of course! It's the stairs up to Platform 14. ::) White hot, actually! Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 12, 2024, 13:28:07 I didn't want to make this too easy, so I cropped the original. Here's the full picture, with added clues. The backwards writing is due the the 'johnneyw effect', otherwise know as a reflection:

The photo shows the stairs leading down to the subway between Platform 12/13 and Platform 14/15 - in the pre-1965 numbering scheme. I only became aware of this subway when I studied the planning application (https://bristolrailcampaign.org.uk/midland-rooms-at-temple-meads-old-station/) for refurbishing old offices in the Midland Shed. I suppose it should have been obvious that there was some means of getting across the Old Station, but I'd not really given it much thought. There don't appear to be any plans to restore this subway, or use it is any way, This seems a pity, though the cost of making it accessible presumably outweighs it's limited value. The recent plans actually involve covering over the lift shaft associated with the subway. I feel honoured to have an optical effect named after myself (I think)......even if it is confined to the august realm of the Coffee Shop. I shall be endeavouring to have a look at this mystery staircase myself.... presumably no burly chap sporting a badge marked "security" will enquire as to my intentions. It does seem a bit of a missed opportunity not to utilise this old feature of the station but perhaps there are planned operational rather than public uses for it. Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Red Squirrel on May 20, 2024, 13:51:38 I’m not aware of any plans to make any use of it, though it was, apparently, unblocked relatively recently.
My picture was taken through a window (hence the reflection) by holding my phone at full stretch above my head. You’d need a stepladder to get this view directly. Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 20, 2024, 20:30:59 So I'm not sure if this just died the death because no-one found it very interesting, or whether everyone just thought 'Ah, yeah' when Chris from Nailsea hit the nail on the head... Sorry about that, Red Squirrel. ::) .... presumably no burly chap sporting a badge marked "security" will enquire as to my intentions. You’d need a stepladder to get this view directly. That sort of behaviour would (hopefully) cause a burly chap sporting a badge marked 'security' to enquire as to your intentions. ;D Title: Re: Where was Red Squirrel 7/5/2024 Post by: Chris from Nailsea on May 23, 2024, 22:06:33 Of course! It's the stairs up to Platform 14. ::) White hot, actually! I'm going to offer you all a bit of background information here. Red Squirrel and I were enjoying a pint in Stallards in Trowbridge yesterday, before the meeting at the WWRUG. ;) He then challenged me as to whether I actually knew this answer. I readily confessed that I did not: I had read his references to the undercroft at Bristol Temple Meads, (some of which I have visited, in a previous role) and I then had an inspired guess that his picture might be of the historic stairs up to Platform 14 (which, as any fule kno, doesn't exist ;D ).
