An iconic Devon pub with its own train station is set to go under the hammer at a public auction. The Portsmouth Arms, buried in the Taw Valley, dates back to 1420 is renowned for many things not least the fact it keeps Christmas decorations up all year round.

The current tenants of the Portsmouth Arms - named after the 5th Earl of Portsmouth, Isaac Newton Wallop - have decided to embark on new ventures, prompting the sale of the property.

Could us and other railway buffs raise the 275,000?

Could us and other railway buffs raise the 275,000?

25 years younger and we could have been tempted.  It's not so much the capital - more the business (case and implementing it) and running costs and commitment.  We settled for Melksham, but the Portsmouth Arms just could have got a look in.   I expect that FGW and GWR may have found a request or two for a few more trains to stop, and a noticeable number of exotic tickets being sold.
