Title: Why "DMR", not "DEC", on tickets?
Post by: Marlburian on December 11, 2023, 20:39:56
Someone on my NextDoor neighbourhood forum has just remarked on this, and someone found it "mildly interesting" eight years ago on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/3wn3j7/my_train_ticket_uses_dmr_instead_of_dec/). Any suggestions why?

JNR FBY MCH APR MAY JUN JLY AUG SEP OCT NOV DMR

MCH rather than MAY to avoid MAR/MAY confusion on worn tickets
JLY rather than JUN for JUN/JUL reasons

Others ... I am looking for excuses for them

I can tell you why it's PAR* and not PAR on tickets

Non standard abbreviations for some of the months are used to make it harder to fraudulently alter a ticket. That's what Wikipedia says.

Years ago, I was behind a young man at the Waterloo ticket office who was asking for a ticket to Haslemere. He suddenly realised he wanted to go to Hazlemere in Buckinghamshire, which doesn't have a station ...

Possibly done by the same individual who thought changing the PIS output for LYC from Lympstone Cmdo to Lympstone Comma was a really good idea.  ???
