Title: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 18, 2023, 12:28:55 12 pictures, 11 different places. 10 are my pictures, 9 countries, 8 showing trains ...
1 each, please, for the first 24 hours 1. - Hamburg - stuving (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail01.jpg) 2. - Castlebar - Bob_Blakey (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail02.jpg) 3. - Glasgow Central - Worcester_Passenger (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail03.jpg) 4. - New Orleans - Oxonhutch (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail04.jpg) 5. - Eritrea - stuving (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail05.jpg) 6. - Ljubljana, Slovenia - JayMac (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail06.jpg) 7. - Holt - ellendune (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail07.jpg) 8. - Randazzo / completed by grahame (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail08.jpg) 9. - Portland, Maine - OxonHutch (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail09.jpg) 10. - Randazzo - eightonedee (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail10.jpg) 11. - Tondu - AMLAG (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail11.jpg) 12. - Werningerode - stuving (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail12.jpg) Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: ellendune on October 18, 2023, 13:53:26 No 7 is Holt I think
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Oxonhutch on October 18, 2023, 13:57:23 No 4: New Orleans
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: ChrisB on October 18, 2023, 14:02:29 8: I think that's the (ex?) Stourbridge cat - so Stourbridge Junction?
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Worcester_Passenger on October 18, 2023, 14:20:00 I'm having problems - there's no numbers appearing and when I refresh I get a different set of pictures, still with no numbers.
But I do recognise Glasgow Central in there. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 18, 2023, 14:25:41 I'm having problems - there's no numbers appearing and when I refresh I get a different set of pictures, still with no numbers. But I do recognise Glasgow Central in there. Oops - I will add numbers. My omission. And, yes, Glasgow Central is the wet one! Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 18, 2023, 14:32:01 Correct ...
7 Holt - ellendune 4 New Orleans - Oxonhutch 3 Glasgow Central - Worcester_Passenger The cat - no, not Stourbridge. May become clearer as the clues sort out. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: AMLAG on October 18, 2023, 14:38:36 11 is Tondu Signal Box. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: stuving on October 18, 2023, 14:39:08 1. is Hamburg - which is easy, as it advertises itself as service U3 of the Hochbahn. The location is sneakier, as the image has been cropped so it's not clear it's half-indoors (under a building) - on Mönkedamm, where the westbound U-bahn comes up from the tunnel under the Rathaus.
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: eightonedee on October 18, 2023, 17:59:35 10 is Randazzo, Sicily ('cos it says so on the sign!).

Ah, that brings back fond memories of watching the trains go past along there. The destination board says "Wandsbek" a district where my German grandparents lived. Grandfather and uncle were both Pastors there. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: JayMac on October 18, 2023, 19:53:55 6. Ljubljana, Slovenia?
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: stuving on October 21, 2023, 00:03:21 ... and back to Germany for 12: the HSB at Werningerode.
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 21, 2023, 02:47:41 Just 4 left ...
1. - Hamburg - stuving 2. (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail02.jpg) 3. - Glasgow Central - Worcester_Passenger 4. - New Orleans - Oxonhutch 5. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Bob_Blakey on October 21, 2023, 11:11:01 2. Castlebar Railway Station
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Oxonhutch on October 21, 2023, 12:27:27 9: Portland, Maine
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 21, 2023, 12:54:03 9: Portland, Maine 2. Castlebar Railway Station Yes, and yes - just these two left: 5. (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail05.jpg) 8. (http://www.wellho.net/pix/worldrail08.jpg) Note my initial hint of 12 pictures but only 11 places. So which was the cat at? Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: PrestburyRoad on October 21, 2023, 14:33:45 5 make me imagine an obscure rural branch line in Italy or Spain that no-one has dared to close. But I've no idea which one.

It looks like it, but it isn't. It's a line that closed in 1975 and re-opened 20 years later. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: JayMac on October 21, 2023, 17:44:02 8. Catford? Meows Cop? Litterhampton? :P
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 21, 2023, 19:03:50 8. Catford? Meows Cop? Litterhampton? :P I think perhaps the clue was confusing. It's a second picture at one of the places already indentified. 12 pictures, 11 places. Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: froome on October 21, 2023, 21:02:15 8. Catford? Meows Cop? Litterhampton? :P I think perhaps the clue was confusing. It's a second picture at one of the places already indentified. 12 pictures, 11 places. A more modern photo from Holt perhaps? Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Oxonhutch on October 21, 2023, 21:07:25 The cat: The granites kerbs and pavoirs feel British and there isn't an awful lot left of Holt Junction so I will plump for Tondu. So a Welsh cath.
Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: Bob_Blakey on October 22, 2023, 09:15:43 5. I think it would be nigh on impossible to identify the exact location of this image but I am reasonably confident that this is one of the preserved Fiat Littorina railcars in service on the Ferrovia Circumetnea line in Sicily.

Sorry - you are a l-o-n-g way away, geographically. No. 5 is the one picture I did not take ... Yes, but to be fair that's a good spot for the type of train. It's just that the answer to the question "where did the Italians take their trains in the 1930s and then go away and leave them behind?" is Eritrea. It's just that the answer to the question "where did the Italians take their trains in the 1930s and then go away and leave them behind?" is Eritrea. Yes - Eritrea (and, yes, similar to the sort of thing on the round Etna railway). Ironically, the cat (picture no. 8 ) was from the round Etna railway - Randazzo. Having given the clue that it was one of the same places as the other pictures, I felt the tiles looked very much Meditteranean and someone would then guess it quickly. Clearly my feelings were wrong !! Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: ellendune on October 23, 2023, 12:52:19 No. 5 is the one picture I did not take ... Really I didn't think you were old enough to have taken Picture No 7! Title: Re: World of Rail Post by: grahame on October 23, 2023, 13:01:48 No. 5 is the one picture I did not take ... Really I didn't think you were old enough to have taken Picture No 7! Oh - err. I took no. 7 of a postcard we have here. My excuse and I'm sticking with it!
