Interesting they have reported it to the British Transport Police.  I didn't realise the BTP covered heritage lines.  I am pretty sure the regrettably frequent attacks on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway have been reported to Wiltshire Police.

It would be *lovely* if photos of this sort of vandalism didn't immediately make their way onto media sites as that reinforces the perpetrators' deed/reward loop.

I hope that the vandals are caught and punished severely.
I see no harm in news reports, but feel that images are best avoided.

Possibly if mainline trains have been vandalised in the area as well they may have knowledge of the perpetrators.

Either way, sad and pointless.

And if the media feel that images ARE needed, perhaps there should be a code of practice, whereby the details of the graffiti are "blurred out" or obscured, as faces and number plates often are.
