Title: You need a ticket to travel to Oxford ... tap no good
Post by: didcotdean on July 19, 2023, 11:22:36
Yesterday two separate parties, most probably foreign tourists, seated close to me travelling to Oxford had used a credit card tap to pass the gate line at Paddington. All paid up for a ticket without complaint and were charged the off-peak fare rather than something more punitive.  They were also advised to get their tap cancelled by TfL but it isn't clear they understood what that was or how to do it.

Shouldn't there be better signage on or at the gates to try to head off this inadvertent usage? Or widen out PAYG at more than the current snails pace maybe.

Classic example of how human help is needed - and needed the more because of a fragmented and complex fare and revenue connection system.

On several occasions I have seen people tap their paper tickets on the reader and wonder why the barrier doesn't open.
