Post by: grahame on May 25, 2023, 08:09:30 "What are the railways for" ... interesting that "On this day" has come up with the authorisation of the East Cornwall Mineral Railway ( https://saltash.org/onewebmedia/Broad%20Gauge%20to%20Calstoc1.pdf ) and that's what many of the original railways were for ... freight / heavy haul. That still remains a major traffic at times, with freight trains getting in the way of scheduled passenger services. Witness - cancelled train yesterday due to "congestion" at even the most unlikely of places.

And "What are the railways for?" - a source of picture quizzes, that's what!
