Title: Mini quiz - where was TonyK?
Post by: TonyK on December 08, 2022, 15:15:46
I was bored, and it wasn't a bad day. The idea of a very small quiz occurred to me. So:

Which line was this?

On the same former line, which station once stood below this bridge?

And under repair at the moment, what crosses the line here?

Have you been travelling back to your old stamping ground, TonyK?

Is it the Tiverton branch with picture 3 being the Great Western Canal aqueduct?

Indeed so - that didn't take long!

For anyone who doesn't know what it is, there is a most helpful label on the "wet" side.

Just the middle picture to go.

Depends on which you mean - there are many. I was in Bristol briefly last week.

The first pic reminded me of Talbot Road bridge on the North Somerset, and the second looked like Whitchurch Halt (on the same line) to me - until I checked on Google Maps! Either the bridge has gone, or it's lost in the undergrowth! https://goo.gl/maps/YPmiyqG95PKc6jSP9

The third should have made it obvious that it weren't the North Som though...

Is the second photo the bridge by the old Halberton station?

Is the second photo the bridge by the old Halberton station?

Certainly is! Served by the Tivvy Bumper, still to be found in Tiverton museum. There's a picture of the station in what passes as a heyday on the Disused Stations (http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/h/halberton_halt/) website. Not an architectural marvel, really.

There are similarities to the Whitchurch bridge, though not the Brislington one, IMHO. Having crossed the Whitchurch bridge many times, I can recall it being almost flush with the ground in the early 1980s, as though the field had risen to fill the gap. I would imagine that soil has been put there in large quantities.
