Title: National Routeing Guide Advice
Post by: Oxonhutch on March 12, 2022, 15:28:14
I am planning on taking a trip up to Lancashire to visit my ailing mum on Monday from Cholsey to Manchester for which there is offered a senior railcard first class off peak open return routed 'Any Permitted' and coming back on Thursday. Price = £158.55. On this ticket a break of journey is allowed on both the outward and return journey. The Routeing (sic) Guide has Cholsey in both the Reading and Didcot routeing points and will be travelling via Reading as that offers the best connection. The Guide goes on to give three possible routes: London, RM and RM+NR. The latter interests me as a common routeing point is Warrington and presumably a walk from Bank Quay on the WCML to Central on the old CLC.

I ask if my interpretation of this is correct, for my intention - if it is - is to break my journey at Warrington and continue on the same train up to Leyland via a change at Wigan on a separate WBQ-LEY first class open return. This keeps me in first class for a greater part of the journey than travelling via Manchester Piccadilly and taking the Northern local from there.

I ask because I cannot find a similar off-peak first class fare CHO-WBQ for less than £210.80 and the Routeing Guide is a nightmare.
