https://www.raildeliverygroup.com/uk-rail-industry/events/railway-day.html Quote Railway Day Railway Day is our annual Twitter celebration of all the work our passenger and freight colleagues do to keep Britain's railway running - from those driving trains full of passengers or cargo to ticket office staff, control room operators and track maintenance engineers. The Day is usually held in the middle of April, and is a partner activity to Stations Day (mid-October). Quote Railway Day is held entirely on Twitter, so everyone is welcome. "A short stroll from the heart of Bristol town center, the impressive Temple Meads Station is nestled among a variety of local businesses. Visitors and commuters can enjoy a delightful array of florists, artisanal bakeries, and live music in the surrounding area." Title: Re: World cup of train stations? What a beautiful looking station. Just had a look at the track lay of the station and it only has two platforms, one of the platforms is out of use. Title: Re: World cup of train stations? Post by: grahame on October 14, 2024, 09:22:52 Wemyss Bay(last years winner) on the West Coast of Scotland, is being featured on BBC breakfast news Monday 14 October 2024. What a beautiful looking station. Just had a look at the track lay of the station and it only has two platforms, one of the platforms is out of use. I have not been there for many years and it was, and remains from pictures I have seen, beautiful. As a modern railway terminal of a half hourly EMU service to / from Glasgow, it needs no more than a single platform for normal operation and indeed could operate well with more basic facilities. I am reminded of our local 30 minute EMU to ferry service at Lymington Pier, though note that the ratio of foot to vehicle traffic is probably very different. Title: Re: World cup of train stations? Post by: Mark A on October 14, 2024, 09:42:44 Wemyss Bay aside, Scotland isn't keen on single-platform terminuses. Both Leven and Tweedbank have two platform faces, and long ones too. Probably best not to tell Portishead.

"A short stroll from the heart of Bristol town center, the impressive Temple Meads Station is nestled among a variety of local businesses. Visitors and commuters can enjoy a delightful array of florists, artisanal bakeries, and live music in the surrounding area." Aside from the Websterised spelling of ‘centre’ (cultural ignorance, or IT illiteracy?) the description of the area around BRI does seem rather fanciful. There is a bakery (what makes a bakery artisanal? Employing a baker?) in the arches under the station incline, and florist sometimes sets up shop outside the front entrance; occasionally I have heard taxi drivers whistling… but to suggest that the area is rich in culture is a bit wide of the mark. Temple Meads is a brisk 15 minute walk from Bristol’s carfax, so it’s a stretch to call it a short stroll. Bristol became a county in 1373, only becoming a city in 1542. Perhaps the RDG didn’t get the memo. BRI is hardly looking its best at the moment. In a few years time, when the scaffolding has gone and the new entrances are open, it will without doubt get a gong.
