Title: Re: Advent quiz - day 20 - Railway Bridges Quiz no2 Post by: Oxonhutch on December 20, 2021, 22:31:34 11 is the Catchpit at High Peak Junction at the Cromford end of the Cromford & High Peak Railway. Can someone explain how this worked please? There were gongs so the pointsman could discern by its speed which direction the downward flight took - dock or pit. I have seen a photo a the catch pit full of a run-away, and it is carnage. Prior to its installation, a raft of wagons had run away, hit the curve at the bottom (beyond the over bridge pictured), leapt straight over the Cromford Canal and the Midland Main Line (I believe this was the main motivation for the pit) and landed in the field opposite.
