Can someone explain how this worked please?

IIRC it was effectively a very deep sand drag on a downward incline to restrain any runaways. Fitted between the up and down tracks of what was operated as a ropeway, a bloke was stationed at the points leading towards the catchpit, and he basically spent his time listening out for wagons coming down at dangerously high speed, ready to divert them off the normal tracks.

The train was interesting as it was a 4 car and the second 2 where West Midland trains so the Chiltern one seen in the picture is on loan to West Midland.

There were gongs so the pointsman could discern by its speed which direction the downward flight took - dock or pit. I have seen a photo a the catch pit full of a run-away, and it is carnage.
Prior to its installation, a raft of wagons had run away, hit the curve at the bottom (beyond the over bridge pictured), leapt straight over the Cromford Canal and the Midland Main Line (I believe this was the main motivation for the pit) and landed in the field opposite.

Thanks for the clue, but I don't know the answer.  Is the "Terrier" a reference to the Southern Railway's long-lived small tank engines?
