The LFA and Network Rail have launched a new open call competition for creative and innovative solutions for pop-up, flexible bike parking facilities that can easily be rolled out at different times and locations to support cyclists using railway stations. The open call invites architects, designers and engineers to create a prototype installation, testing new ideas on how railway stations can adapt to the changing demand in bike parking provision and allowing Network Rail to provide easy to use and safe bike storage for cyclists, whilst they make their onward journeys.

In the last decade, stations have experienced a significant increase in the demand for bike parking, coinciding with the rapid implementation of pop-up bike lanes across cities. The competition brief calls for creative bike storage solutions at stations that can adapt to fluctuating demand through different seasons, weather conditions or major public events.

Following an initial expression of interest stage, up to six shortlisted teams will be paid an honorarium of £500 to work up an outline proposal. A winning team will be appointed in November 2021 and awarded £12,000 (including a £4,000 design fee) to develop a fully costed, feasible design that can be delivered in June 2022 at one of Network Rail’s mainline London stations as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

Detailed information for entrants is available here. The closing date for first stage expressions of interest is Thursday 30 September 2021.

The shortlist has been announced, but I can't get the relevant page to work yet.

Rather silly idea in my view.
Cycle racks with provision for locking the cycles are a mature technology.
As are shelters to keep rain off.

Why do we need "creative bike storage solutions at stations"

And why "pop up" rather than simple fixed installation ?

And as for "adapt to the changing demand in bike parking provision" why not just provide ample cycle racks ALL THE TIME.

This reminds me of the study or consultation regarding "innovative seating solutions" at railway stations. Presumably as an alternative to simply providing more seating of a simple and established design.

And of of course the mantra about "flexible train length, to adjust to changing demand" Which is simply newspeak for "too short"

Pop up shops either meet a seasonal demand, such as Christmas, or allow a fledgling retailer exposure they couldn't otherwise afford, often while occupying property that is between longer leases. None of these conditions apply to bike parking. Although cycle travel does fluctuate seasonally, as does car or train travel, it's only a small fluctuation, not comparable to annual retail events. Leases do not apply neither does the need for start-up exposure. Then there's the problem that pop up infrastructure can easily pop down again, which doesn't encourage long-term trends to greater active travel that supposedly are being encouraged. And as Broadgage says, bike racks are a mature and simple technology (though often badly installed).

I thought it was silly then, and I still think it is silly.
Another case of calling for "innovative solutions" rather than building proper trains with space for cycles, heavy luggage, surfboards, and the other things taken on proper trains, but prohibited or restricted on new shorter units.

And as above, looks dangerous in the event of accident. Serious accidents are now very rare, but can never be entirely eliminated.
