Probably quite a few members of this forum are also part of a campaign to (re)open a local railway station. Around Bristol we have a few in the offing - North Filton, Henbury, Portway, Ashley Down - and more potential sites. Every site is a bit different, but it ought to be possible to come up with a rough estimate for two 'standard' types:

• A fully-accessible two platform station, with lift access to a footbridge
• A simple single-platform station

Portway Park and Ride station is currently costed at £8 million, which sounds like rather a lot for a simple 5-car halt. Other stations were costed in 2015:

North Filton Station £7m
Henbury Station £6m to £9m
Constable Road £19m
Ashley Hill (sic) £11m

Elsewhere I've seen a figure of £22 million for Worcestershire Parkway.

Better figures must be available somewhere, but I can't find them despite a couple of days of rummaging.

The outlier here is Constable Road (Lockleaze), which involves slewing the Filton Reliefs to make room for a platform.

It seems very odd that Henbury - a single platform station - may cost more than North Filton with its two platforms, lifts etc.

What seems even odder to me is that Cullompton (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-59082444) - which presumably will be broadly comparable to, but simpler than, Worcestershire Parkway - has been awarded £5 million for further development.

So: how much should it cost to build a train station?

Remember that Worcestershire Parkway is effectively two stations - one of each of your suggestions, plus links between the two.

Yes; I though it was a useful benchmark in that a straightforward two-platform accessible station certainly shouldn't cost more that that figure!

If you are reopenning a former station, you immediately have the question of how much of the original station is left and available for reuse, which might go some way to explaining the wide range of costs. Fishguard & Goodwick cost less than £1m to reopen, with most of the platform already in place.

The lack of a bus/rail interchange at Cheadle won't be legal once the Bus Back Better strategy comes into full effect.
