Title: Forth crossings. Post by: grahame on January 11, 2021, 18:08:13 Let's call it "in practice for the Severn" I have been working out as best I can the fixed forth crossings ... under and over
1806 - Plan refered to in the reports respecting a tunnel under the Forth (Seen crossing underneath the Queensferry Crossing) "The success of coal mining operations to the west of Queensferry meant that a proposal mooted in 1805 for a tunnel 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of Inchgarvie was taken much more seriously." https://maps.nls.uk/view/216547746 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Forth_Crossing 1880 - proposed railway tunnel (Seen downriver of other crossings) https://maps.nls.uk/transport/railways/rec/8227 1882 - Map of the North British railway system https://maps.nls.uk/view/142842078 1890 - Forth Rail Bridge - COMPLETED https://www.theforthbridges.org/forth-bridge/ 1936 - Kincardine Bridge - COMPLETED https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kincardine_Bridge 1964 - Mining Tunnel - COMPLETED (April) bus since CLOSED https://www.scottishfield.co.uk/culture/the-forgotten-tunnel-that-crosses-the-river-forth/ 1964 - Forth (road) Bridge - COMPLETED (September) https://www.theforthbridges.org/forth-road-bridge/ 2008 - Clackmannanshire Bridge - COMPLETED https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clackmannanshire_Bridge 2017 - The Queensferry Crossing - COMPLETED https://www.theforthbridges.org/queensferry-crossing/ (http://www.wellho.net/pix/forthcrossingsmap_1.jpg) (http://www.wellho.net/pix/forthcrossingsmap_2.jpg) (http://www.wellho.net/pix/forthcrossingsmap_3.jpg) Title: Re: Forth crossings. Post by: grahame on January 13, 2021, 08:23:44 As soon as I condemn tunnels under the Forth to history, a new proposal pops up!
From STV (https://news.stv.tv/politics/firth-of-forth-tunnel-part-of-22bn-greens-rail-plan?top) Quote The Scottish Greens have proposed a GBP-22bn rail plan which includes nationalising services and creating a tunnel under the Firth of Forth. The Rail for All programme, devised by Deltix Transport Consulting, would pull investment from extending the road network, doubling the resources pumped into rail. With proposals to completely electrify the rail network by 2030, the plan would see Scotland?s rail infrastructure produce net zero carbon. But the boldest plan would see a tunnel built under the Firth of Forth between Edinburgh and Fife. The project, estimated to cost between GBP-4bn and GBP-6bn, would relieve a "bottleneck" impacting upon services on the east coast, which currently have to run through Haymarket station in Edinburgh along with all other trains leaving the capital. The tunnel would also see a station created at Leith to connect the city centre to the new crossing.
