Title: Sleepless in Settle? Post by: grahame on December 16, 2020, 00:44:39 Britain's 7 most scenic rail journeys
From Wanderlust (https://www.wanderlust.co.uk/content/britains-most-scenic-rail-journeys/) - "Britain's 7 most scenic rail journeys" ... at No. 2 is "Settle to Carlisle, Yorkshire Dales National Park". Fair enough ... but why list " Caledonian Sleeper, London to Scotland" and "Cornwall Sleeper, London Paddington to Penzance" - scenic journeys you can miss if you're fast asleep with window blinds down. I've had the 'pleasure' of the Caledonian to Fort William during the week of the longest day on a couple of occasions now and also booked for same in 2021. I make sure I'm tucked up in bed as it leaves Euston and the alarm set for 4.30am. I am in the lounge before departure from Edinburgh, so I concur with the description. However, I agree with you if doing the journey at this time of year (December) whenn it would be in darkness for almost the entire journey. I put 'pleasure' in quotes because - whilst the view out of the window was spectacular, the service inside the train was not quite so! Title: Re: Sleepless in Settle? Post by: johnneyw on December 16, 2020, 15:34:10 If you can include the Snowdon Mountain Railway, I can't understand why the Welsh Highland Railway wasn't there. It's route even features the Aberglaslyn Pass, apparently voted "The Finest View in Britain" on the National Trust website. I suppose all these things are subjective and differently researched.

If you click on the word "Wanderlust" in my original post is should take you straight to the page including 1. West Highland line, Scotland 2. Settle to Carlisle, Yorkshire Dales National Park Title: Re: Sleepless in Settle? Post by: Jamsdad on December 17, 2020, 18:37:17 I agree that sleepers cant be included as you don't see anything! So could I put in a plea for St Erth to St Ives in place of the Night Riviera?
Title: Re: Sleepless in Settle? Post by: eightf48544 on December 18, 2020, 12:37:04 Thanks Grahame, how on earth did you find them? I couldn't get to them fron the main website.
As mentioned above if we rule out sleepers then defnitely my vote goes to the Welsh Highland, whole length, but in winter when there's no leaves on the trees. You could add the Ffestiniog as bonus. I'd go Blaenau Ffestiniog to Carnarvon. you get the climb out of Beddgelert with the S bend. Title: Re: Sleepless in Settle? Post by: grahame on December 18, 2020, 13:12:05 Thanks Grahame, how on earth did you find them? Started from the end :D ... Picked up the full link to the page from social media or consolidator site and started there, rather than the top of Wanderlust. Title: Re: Sleepless in Settle?
