Title: Nine Places with a Railway ?Connection? in Common - Advent Quiz 6 December
Post by: eightonedee on December 06, 2020, 06:47:46
I am looking for nine of these. I am looking for the answers to each clue, and what the nine are collectively.

1 -  One has been saved for the nation.

2 & 3 - Two are close together. Of these one has artistic connections (both military and religious), the other seems to be mis-named.

4 - Another is not where youngsters should find themselves.

5, 6, 7 & 8 - The next four have equestrian connections. One is at the top of its game, one is all that?s left, one is for wealthy sportsmen and the last one funded by phones.

9 - The last one could be one of two.

What are they?

I am looking for nine of these. ...

I am scratching my head looking for any of these.   Which is a real pleasure instead of purely setting Advent Quizzes - thank you.

Thanks Grahame

It's a bit quiet out there - perhaps people or still trying to yesterday's map quiz! It's a cold dreary day out there so do give it some thought.

A key clue may have to be given later today....

63 thread reads so far - in addition to those people who have it via "recent posts", etc ... only quiet in terms of lack of early follower up posts which is not something to worry about where there's a connection between the answers, as you're indicating there is in this case.

My first thought was that they might be railway tunnels. That was because I always think of Sodbury tunnel as being Badminton tunnel, which would fit the equestrian wealthy sportsmen clue. But the only other possible one that might fit was the Two Tunnels on the old S&D (now the Two Tunnels cyclepath), which could be 2 & 3, as one of those (Devonshire) does appear to be misnamed. But I don't know about the artistic connections, or any of the others, so am probably barking up the wrong tree, as they say.

I think this needs the key clue-

Some knowledge of GWR steam engines will be needed......

(apologies to anyone who thinks this should have been in the puzzle at the outset)

Hmmm ... perhaps we are looking at Halls, Manors or Castles (the old ones!) here.  Or are we on statues of kings? Don't think there were Tunnel or Bridge classes ....

If you're going Castles then 9 could be Upton Castle 5065 or Upton Castle 5093.

Or perhaps Rood Ashton Hall which was thought to be Albert Hall?

There were 2 Lamphey Castles too, so maybe not.

The answers have nothing to do with locomotives changing names, I'm afraid.

It is indeed! Your local probation service is no doubt familiar with the relevant establishment!

Sorry Tony - not one of the nine I am looking for.

Aha - so no. 2 is 7808 Cookham Manor. The clue alludes to Stanley Spencer, who is probably Cookham's most famous resident, and is known mainly for his religious paintings and work as an officail war artist (in a shipyard) and other wartime pictures.

Well done Stuving & TonyN - hopefully a pattern is now emerging that will result in the rest being solved........

The obvious set of nine is the preserved (in some manner or another) Manors. However, lining them up with the clues on a one for one basis is not so obvious. But ...

Four have been used for equestrian activities of some kind, Foxcote (Polo), Ditcheat (Paul Nicholls's training stables), Hinton (owned by an owner), and Dinmore which was owned by Martin Dawes (he of Carphone Warehouse) until going on sale last year. But then the current house at Lydham was the stables until 30 years ago.

Odney is very close to - in some respects in - Cookham. But it has a choice other names, Lullebrook or possibly Lillebrook, if they are not other manors altogether. And then the loco was renamed Norton Manor.

So some of the bits will fit in several holes, in pushed a little bit.

Stuving (almost) smashes it!

To put anyone else out of their misery, the remaining "non-equestrian" one I intended to refer to was Hinton Manor. There are two country houses of this name in GWR territory (one near Faringdon, another near Marlborough) ..and yet another near Waterlooville in Hampshire. I cannot find which of the first two the GWR intended to honour, but as the last was in Southern territory I assume it was not that one.

I was thinking of the Hinton Manor in Hinton Parva, which is near Lambourn and thus near neither Faringdon nor Marlborough. The relevant data I found was:
Quote
Hinton Manor, formerly the home of racehorse owner Michael Talbot-Ponsonby and his family ... Michael Talbot Ponsonby was a racehorse owner and a keen huntsman, hunting with both the Warwickshire and the Heythrop until 1995.

Parishes are notoriously numerous, with the same name cropping up many times over in different places. Manors are worse, with several per parish in some parts of the country.
