Title: News from Carlton and Netherfield stations - to compare with our region.
Post by: grahame on November 03, 2020, 08:04:36
I seem to that between the closure and re-opening of the station at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch the longest station name on the network was Carlton and Netherfield for Gedling and Colwick. That has been shortened now - and my news feed overnight - brought back memories of the old name for one of the two staions to the east of Nottingham on lines that fork towards Grantham and towards Newark.

From Gedling Eye (https://www.gedlingeye.co.uk/news/tony-cave-its-the-end-of-the-line-for-railway-franchising/) - an update from Tony Cave with community links to his local stations in very much the same way we have here in Melksham.  Interesting to read his metrics / thoughts on train loading, engineering works, heritage and modernisation.  I won't do a long quote - very much worth a quick read by anyone who's looking at where we are as it helps undertsand where, perhaps, we could be going right across the network.

Carlton and Netherfield is an interesting example of where BR rationalied the pregrouping situation whereby the Midland line to Lincoln ran parrallel with the Great Nothern line to Grantham by putting a spur actross to the GN at Netherfield the GN line from Nottingham Victoria could be shut and both services served from Nottingham Midland.

Had the GC survived it would have given BR a problem as to what station to use to serve Grantham and Lincoln
