Title: Stopping trains that overshoot ...
Post by: grahame on November 02, 2020, 10:37:24
I have seen pictures (from black and white days) of steam engines that have gone off the end of the track and thought the end of the station - sometimes at height - to the road outside.   And now from Dutch News (https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/11/whale-tail-sculpture-stops-rotterdam-metro-train-from-crashing-into-water/)

Quote
A metro train serving the town of Spijkenisse, near Rotterdam, has crashed through the barrier at the end of the track and only the sculpture of a whale has stopped it plummeting into the water below. The train is now suspended 10 metres above a footpath, thanks to the whale?s tail, and is likely to remain there for some time. ?We are trying to decide how we can bring the train down in a careful and controlled manner,? a local safety board spokesman told broadcaster NOS.

What dual purpose sculptures would members suggest for termini in the UK - both to act as catchnets or crumple zones behind the buffers, and to reflect the local area?

This is the original example:

Hard to compete with, frankly. It reminds me of an Infinite Improbability Drive!

A giant cushion or mattress springs immediately to mind, perhaps sponsored by one of the companies that spends vast amounts advertising their wares on TV.

The sliding Stop blocks seem to have failed to do their job

Edinburgh Waverley.
A large rubber set of bagpipes that make an awful noise when you hit them.

Hard to compete with, frankly. It reminds me of an Infinite Improbability Drive!

Shows just what an extra hot cup of tea can deliver.

But then the unanswered question is, where is the bowl of petunias?

Bristol Temple Meads...a couple of IKB top hats over the buffers on Platform 1. Mind you seeing how slow the Severn Beach 166s come in, I reckon I could stop it with my little finger !

Good job the driver wasn't routed via the middle road (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/search/de+akkers+rotterdam+metro/@51.832464,4.31352,218m/data=!3m1!1e3)

A large Rubber Malteeser for Platform 1 at Slough.

If that doesn't work it could always be rescued by Thunderbird 2 perhaps.

(The TV show was made not far from the Mars factory.)

I don't which stations might be associated with cricket grounds, but a giant pair of wicket keeper's gloves.

Or goalkeeper's gloves, if Ashton Gate ever reopens (though it wouldn't have a terminal platform).

Oval on the Northern line or Arsenal on the Piccadilly line though neither are terminating stations  ;D
And anyway Arsenal have since moved on.

As they are being dug up anyway, the Weymouth tramlines would do a good job at Weymouth.

Indeed ... my thought for Weymouth was a long sand drag ...

Although Drayton Park is maybe a little closer, Arsenal is still the closest main 'tube' station to the Emirates (along with Holloway Road - closed on match days).

And Old Trafford halt. Not a terminus and nothing even stops there since, I think, 2018.

Exmouth and Penzance could each have a giant scone, cream first in Exmouth obviously.

What a massive fluke!

A clear winner already!
