A statue of a soldier said to be too frightening to be faced by people visiting a garden of rest in Nailsea is to come to Paulton instead. The 4ft tall bronze statue depicts an airborne sapper, typical of those who died when their glider crashed into a meadow called Double Hills, near Paulton, on its way to the Battle of Arnhem on September 14, 1944 (link below.)

Nailsea and District Royal British Legion wanted to place it in its garden of rest.

But Nailsea councillors refused, saying it could unnerve people who came to the garden to remember their loved ones.

Undaunted, Legion members asked the organisers of the annual Arnhem ceremony in Paulton if they would like to put the statue up near the battle memorial, at Double Hills, just outside the village.

It will be unveiled at this year's Arnhem ceremony, on Sunday, September 7, in front of Maj Gen Geoff Field.

Nailsea Town Council has instead invested ^30,000 in a statue of a glassblower to commemorate a local industry.
