Title: A Reading rememberance
Post by: CyclingSid on June 05, 2020, 17:35:34
There is an article in the May edition of Weather (magazine of the Royal Meteorological Society) titled Reading's tornado fatality remembered.

This details the incident, as Reading station was being built, on 24 March 1840 when Henry West was blown from the station roof by a tornado.

A memorial board was erected by his fellow workman in St Laurence's churchyard. It is highlighted in 2019 http://readingtradesunioncouncil.blogspot.com/2019/04/international-workers-memorial-day-in.html (http://readingtradesunioncouncil.blogspot.com/2019/04/international-workers-memorial-day-in.html).
There is also a version in the National Railway Museum https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8008110/in-memory-of-henry-west-memorial (https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8008110/in-memory-of-henry-west-memorial).
There is also a plaque on Reading station, on Platform 7, which survived the rebuilding https://www.flickr.com/photos/wirewiping/11435004556 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/wirewiping/11435004556).
