Title: Re: Pacers featured on BBC1 one show(wednesday) Post by: ChrisB on January 23, 2020, 10:44:57 3 in total - Tim Dunn, one of the judges, tweeted this last night -
Quote The three #TransformaPacer @transportgovuk competition winners have been announced! As I was one of the judges who have awarded a Pacer carriage to be converted for use, here's a bit more on: -@airdaleNHSFT Keighley -@FagleySchool Keighley -@Platform_1_HD1 why I like each: The Airdale Hospital has a clear plan for the carriage to become a mixed-use space to improve the experience of patients and local community, esp children– primarily as a relaxing, non-clinical space. Some hospitals need a bit of joy. I hope this helps to bring some smiles. Fagley School @FagleySchool (Bradford) plans are BRILLIANT. They're planning to #transformapacer into a science laboratory to serve the school and local community as a dedicated STEM learning environment. I am very keen on #STEM education projects indeed. Ace! Finally, @Platform_1_HD1 Huddersfield. Gosh. This one brought me to tears. A men’s mental health charity; their vision is to convert the Pacer into a new space allowing them to hold a wider range of activities for the men they support. There is kindness to be found here. We assessed all entries' fundraising abilities, understanding of issues & practicalities of turning an old rail vehicle into an occasional-use building or asset. All shortlisted applicants were good, but those were our panel faves objectively. Those 3 Pacer carriages may've outlasted their use on Britain's railways, but now they can bring joy, delight and education to others. It's been a privilege to be a part of the process. Kudos to @transportgovuk & @PorterbrookRail teams. I look forward to seeing their progress! Title: Re: Pacers featured on BBC1 one show(wednesday) Post by: grahame on January 23, 2020, 12:41:52 When it was announced that Pacers were to be donated for alternative use, I was at first under the impression that there would be large numbers of them made available. Is this still the case or is it just restricted to those 3? From the Yorkshire Post (https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/heritage/two-of-northern-s-pacer-trains-are-going-to-this-heritage-railway-to-be-preserved-1-10168000) Quote The majority of Northern's 102 Pacers, which are owned by Angel Trains, are to be scrapped and the metal recycled - it's likely to end up abroad. The specialists awarded the contract for dismantling the units are C F Booth in Rotherham, and pictures have already emerged of the redundant Pacers waiting in their sidings to be broken up. The first of the Class 142 generation to be manufactured, 142001, has already arrived at its new home - the National Railway Museum. Several years ago it was decided that a Pacer should be preserved for the national collection. Angel donated one to the NRM, and last week it arrived at their Locomotion site in Shildon, where it is currently being stored in the sidings. It will eventually run on a test track and give rides to visitors. It will go on display at the main site in York following redevelopment work at the attraction. The NRM will also consider loaning it to heritage lines, including the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. - The emergency services have been offered Pacers for use as training vehicles in anti-terrorism and firearms exercises, although it's not known whether any have been requested. - Heritage railways are likely to show an interest in running Pacers on their lines - two are heading to Chasewater in Staffordshire and other units may go elsewhere. 21:00 Britannia's Burning: Fire on The Bridge Quote This film marks 50 years since the fire that ravaged the Britannia railway bridge over the treacherous Menai Straits to Anglesey. It includes remarkable archive and moving eyewitness accounts of the destruction and rebirth of a British engineering masterpiece. Using a wealth of footage from the time, stunning photography and first-hand testimonies from the men who risked their lives fighting the flames, this is the vivid story of the Britannia Bridge from its building in the Victorian Age to its resurrection in the 1970s. The bridge was the work of engineering genius Robert Stephenson - son of railway pioneer George Stephenson and a contemporary of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This film shows how a child naively lit a piece of paper, leading to a raging inferno that caused multi-million pound damage to the rail crossing that connected London and Dublin for 120 years. It charts the building of the original bridge, through the disastrous fire and the tragic deaths involved in its rebuilding as a modern road bridge. A fitting tribute to both the original engineers and the fire fighters who put everything on the line to save an iconic piece of British history. This is the story of the night people exclaimed in horror that “Britannia’s Burning.” This is a repeat from BBC 1 Wales on Sunday evening - it can be viewed now thoughout the UK on iPlayer at the link below: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000jljp (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000jljp) Title: Rail programmes THURSDAY 28th May Post by: infoman on May 28, 2020, 09:20:10 Yesterday on channel 25

No "spoilers" here - I may post further afterwards. Enjoyed the show ... though I felt a slight sadness of former glory painted, it has to be said, though Alan Bloom's book. I recall it from the days of Oliver Cromwell coming there days after she pulled the last BR steam special in 1968, and last night's show was a bit of a shocker showing the scramble to get even a single standard gauge locomotive into steam for a special day. I visited once - in passing, with family on our way to Norwich by road. Thinking about that, it must have been a few years BL (Before Lisa), so with my previous wife and it would have been with kids in tow. As the only one of the group of 4 with interest in the traction engines and railways, and with the visit being on a typical rather than "feature" day, the visit was not a long one and featured the nursery strongly in our itinerary. Perhaps a place to go back to next year? Plans to rove around this year have been kiboshed ... next year's list is open. Edit - a correction of a memory Title: Re: Rail programmes THURSDAY 28th May Post by: infoman on May 29, 2020, 08:29:58 Brittania class 700-13 Oliver Cromwell,I wonder why?

Since the original screening last year the series has become historical - how long will it be before we see such crowds again? Bizarrely they've retained the original commercials offering a package of travel and overnight stays. (Might be a competition - I fast forwarded through my recording.) I find the "fare dodgers" series a bit annoying, with the same longish preamble of incidents at the start of each episode and a "taster" before each commercial break of what's coming up after it. Of minor railway interest, yesterday afternoon BBC2 showed "Some Like It Hot", with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon fleeing a gang in 1929 dressed in drag and joining an all-girl orchestra where Marilyn Monroe is the singer. There's a couple of exterior shots of the train the band takes to Florida and some scenes inside the sleeping car. I mention the film because c1962 it was screened at the end of term at my boys-only boarding school. The lust of several hundred adolescents when Marilyn was on screen was palpable. The railroad passenger car that was used in the film is now at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Quote (https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p08dj0xv.jpg) The Flying Scotsman 23:30 BBC Radio 3 Slow Radio We take a journey back in time to recreate the golden age of steam, travelling on the Flying Scotsman from Manchester to Carlisle. We have privileged access to the footplate of this iconic engine which weighs 100 tonnes and is nearly 100 years old. We hear coal being shovelled from the tender into the crackling fire, and the driver operating the train as it speeds along the track at up to 60 miles an hour. The train stops for water and we hear the chatter of the crew. We take a take an almost cinematic journey inside the moving train from carriage to carriage with snatches of the voices of passengers as we go. And we follow a waitress as she collects plates from diners on the train and takes them to the galley kitchen where fine food is prepared. We end our journey in Carlisle where our driver signs off before handing over to another driver for the return journey. And it's only half an hour! Which suggests it's been edited down, while I thought the original idea of "slow ..." programmes was that they were broadcast full length unedited. How the Victorians Built Britain on 5Select (54) - Sunday 7th June 2020 at 17:00 to 18:00 (1 hour long) Quote The Railway Revolution. Series 2, episode 1. Michael Buerk returns with more stories of how Britain was transformed during the Victorian era, beginning by looking at the development of the railway network during the era. Michael hops on board an original Victorian locomotive at Tanfield Railway and discovers the role this former coal track played in the development of the national railway. Post by: infoman on June 21, 2020, 16:57:05 I decided to head out early on Sunday 21 June, apologise for no rail programme info on this date.
Its surprising how long it takes me to put the rail programme info together each day, nearly two hours. Scrolling through the freeview guide, takes approx an hour, and then the typing and getting the series and episode guide correct with the help of the Sky and freeview guides takes another hour. So I will continue up to and include the Sunday 5th July 2020,as by this time I think we will be able to get out and about more than we have been able too recently. One very small point about the amount of views each posting I have made. Most postings I have made have reach nearly 100,I think thats a fair number. What I have noticed is that on every occasion that the same person comes back to look at the same posting it counts as a "view" The reason I raise the above point is that going back a little while ago e-bay changed their viewing system. If the same person came back to look at the item they were selling, they would keep clicking the same posting and it pushed up the those "viewing" the item. Grahame not sure if the forum could have a similar system installed. Title: Re: rail progs for Sunday 21 June, I had the day off. Gosh, thank you very much for all the work you have put into this. I've certainly watched a few very interesting programs that I would otherwise have missed, so it's been much appreciated. I can understand why you want to draw a line under this before too long! Its surprising how long it takes me to put the rail programme info together each day, nearly two hours. Grahame not sure if the forum could have a similar system installed. Infoman, I (for one) and many more appreciate the time it takes to do things like this and the time you have put in - another 2 weeks, to the time we expect much to re-open - looks to be an utterly sensible cut off. I am looking forward to being able to see if I can find a train with social distance (be that 2 metres, pi/2 metres or 1 metre) fairly soon, and I suspect others will be moving out of this current phase too. It's great, been especially so, but I think I and others have probably seen most of the repeats by now. Hopefully they'll have made some more by the time Covid-37 comes around - Michael Portillo visits St Andrews Road and Shirehampton, and Jeremy Corbyn finds a seat because people haven't flocked back to the trains, perhaps. Forum stats ... and "number of reads". The number ticks up at each view, so I believe it can be pumped up by one visitor, and 100 views might be less people. HOWEVER - and especially the case with threads of immediate information such as these, a "view" is NOT recorded when they come up easy on in someone's "recent" feed and across the forum as a whole that's used over 1000 times on a typical day. Once a thread is followed up and people start accessing it to read the whole thread, the number can increase very quickly. That's a long answer on forum stats, I'm afraid. Looking back at yesterday's 81 so far - purely a guess - I would thing 50 to 60 different IPs, and another 40 or so via "recents". Of the latter, perhaps a half would scroll past rapidly and half the remainder would stop briefly, the final quarter doing a thorough read. Of the specific clicks on the thread, perhaps half doing an intense look (going there to read) with the others being crawlers. Of course, if someone reads the thread and then watches a program with their SO, that's someone else reached. So I will continue up to and include the Sunday 5th July 2020,as by this time I think we will be able to get out and about more than we have been able too recently. From the Seaton Tramway (https://www.tram.co.uk) Quote We are delighted to say that Seaton Tramway will re-open on 4th July at 10am. From yesterday on the forum (http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/23764) Quote I took my first train trip since mid-March yesterday. A huge "Thank you" to Infoman for all his hard word over recent months putting together the daily listing of programs with a rail interest during the time we have all been pretty much locked down. It has been very useful indeed to have a short summary of what to watch, and I have learned a great deal about railways as far away as New Zealand, Mexico, Criccieth and Paddington. With things starting to open up again, now is indeed the 'right' time to drop back from this daily report and indeed I look forward to starting to travel beyond a few hundred yards fairly soon. However, we're not going to be back to "business totally as usual" for some considerable time, and I would encourage anyone who spots an interesting tranport program on the TV schedule to post on this board to help those of us just traveling a fraction of the amount we did to keep in touch with the rail world. Big THANK YOU Infoman ... My conclusion from all the info is that generally Yesterday and Channel 5 seem to have more railway programmes than the others. If some thing really hits me in the head,I'll post the details. Just hope no one will mind, if any of the Major television broadcasters are reporting live from a rail way location I'll post the details. They should really do a survey during the first two weeks of February 2022. The novelty value will have worn off; the Christmas and New Year sales should have finished and the tourist season yet to start.

They should rally do a survey during the first two weeks of February 2022. The novelty value will have worh off; the Christmas and New Year sales should have finished and the tourist season yet to start. So, to sum it up... We get a 'new' rail link in England delivered during a pandemic with threats and actual removal of services elsewhere. Infrastructure works are completed very quickly and to budget. Trains so far running punctually and reliably and they're nice and busy. A doubling of frequency coming next year, and the possibility of a Parkway station at Okehampton in the coming years... ...and still there's negativity... ;) Title: programme about British rail Tuesday night Post by: infoman on July 30, 2024, 13:47:42 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b053pxdr
