all depends different every time, some units couple/uncouple first time others have problems like no brake release or difficult to split due to slightly different vehicle heights.

TPE 158's are a pain for that. When they came here we had real problems with there coupling heights.

In theory it ought to be almost instantaneous.

However as Jim says there can be problems, another he didn't mention is curved track.

South Easten had a lot of trouble with the Electrostars at Slade Green depot on curved sidings.

Didn't they have one come apart in service?

Used to be a bit of a fight at BTM on platforms 5 and 7 but that seems to have stopped. I think there might have been a regularly fitter with a crowbar at one time, to seperate 158's.

I believe the time specified for coupling in the timetable specification documents are 4 minutes for all DMUs.

143's are a backside. Couple them up before they did the 14.55 Westbury-Filton, the amount of times we got an emergancy brake app. on the Rhubarb was unbelivable!
