A petition launched to highlight the potential removal of Neath station from the main railway line to London has attracted more than 6,000 signatures in two days.

The proposal, put forward by Professor Mark Barry of Cardiff University as part of his Swansea Bay Metro concept, would mean quicker rail journey times between Cardiff and Swansea, and Swansea to London Paddington.

But the idea has provoked an outcry from people living in Neath and the surrounding area who use the station.

The main part of the proposal is a new diversionary route from Baglan direct to Swansea.  The existing diversion at Briton Ferry is to the Swansea District Line which does not intersect with the main line on its way to Hendy Junction.

This proposal would involve a bridge over the River Neath and some interesting engineering to get a new line across the Swansea Docks/St Thomas area to approach Swansea High Street from the South East so it's no longer a terminus station.

That'll be the day.
