Title: Taxis - getting in on the other side
Post by: grahame on July 10, 2017, 08:59:42
On our "new" taxi rank, vehicles pull up on the right rather than the left.   With the disabled spaces across the one way roadway pulling up on the left.   Does this "work" for you?

Concerns ...

The taxis have two doors for people to get in out in the roadway, and only one door roadside.   And most taxis journeys are from or to street locations where it can be dangerous to get out on the driver's side - meaning that nervous or mobility limited passengers will have to get in one side and slide across to the other at some point more often than is prudent

Disables drivers have to get out of their cars into the roadway .

I've voted "Some other answer" and here it is: "Possibly better this way but no big deal."

That's if we're considering the taxis. Assuming taxi passengers will be sitting in the back, there are doors both sides so it doesn't really matter. The "possibly better" comes in the driver being next to the kerb while sitting in their vehicle, so easier for potential passengers to talk to them before getting in: How much to Acacia Avenue? Can you take me to the Central Wiltshire Industrial Estate Nuclear Research Annexe? etc.

If disabled drivers now have to get out of their cars into the road, that's obviously worse for them, but I don't think it's necessarily worse for taxi passengers. It would be good to see a view from the opposite angle though, to see what else is around there. Is this station taxis or town centre or... ?

Town Centre. Picture from another angle, yesterday evening hence very quiet:

At the station there is one space painted for "Taxis" but you need to book ahead if you want one.  <mode mood="gentle sarcasm">After all - we're just a small town of 25,000 so it's pretty rare for someone to arrive and need to find their way further.</mode>

That makes the disabled spaces look more sensibly positioned, I think, ie just like any other road. What do the cabbies think about the new arrangement?
