Title: View From The Train
Post by: SandTEngineer on May 05, 2017, 18:40:13
Noticed today that a few building icons (or as some might say, eyesores) on the Reading to Taunton route are being demolished.  Newbury Grain(?) Store (1/3 demolished), Westbury Cement Works (only silos remaining) and Castle Cary goods shed (1/2 demolished).

The building coming down in Newbury is Sterling Cables, something of a local landmark.

To be replaced with housing (high-density no doubt) and also an electrification "transformer station" between the site of the soon-to-be former building and the railway.

Thanks for that TC.  I looked up Sterling Cables in Graces Guide.  It states: 1964 New vertical extrusion plant at Newbury.  So its actually not 'that' old.  Elsewhere it states that it was built on the site of Newbury Gas Works and that the land in consequence is probably highly contaminated ::) :P

Didn't Sterling Cables also use to have a factory near the railway at Aldermaston?

Yes Bobm, according to Graces Guide.

Also confirmed in Gricer's Guide, apparently.  :P
