Who said anything about newts??  :o

Calm down, dear!  ;D

The critically endangered newt happens to be located on the route - despite having being located at every infrastructure project since AD 45. Apparently local Britons were furious when the Romans built the Fosse Way from Bath to Lincoln. A campagin group: "savus nos newtae" was set up and almost derailed the plans. Thankfully, thanks to solid leadership from Emperor Augustus, the bulldozers moved in... and the newts survived.

I'm all for protecting nature. But this rail link is a green project. It's not a motorway or airport!
