Just one guess each please for the first 24 hours (but you can have another go if you get one wrong). Some I suspect will go rather quickly ... and I thing one or two may take a while. 1. Not quite, I'm afraid - I thought my green hint was capital and very European ... and very much in area for a GWR forum - but perhaps it was a bit 'last year'. Well, Bristol then, if you say so. Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 08, 2016, 20:13:05 11 Trowbridge. No 8 - Taunton 11 Trowbridge, Stallard Street bridge in background, and 12 Bristol Temple Meads by platform 3/4 Yep, all correct (that extra detail too ... I suppose it's technically platforms 2 and 4 at Temple Meads!) Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 08, 2016, 20:21:45 Just 3 left to identify - no.s 1, 3 and 7. "Open house" for anyone who's identified one of the others already -even though it's not qute 24 hours yet.
One of these pictures was actually taken within the last 24 hours (even now ...) 1. (http://www.wellho.net/pix/qzm16_01.jpg) 3. (http://www.wellho.net/pix/qzm16_03.jpg) 7. Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 08, 2016, 21:22:28 Is 3 Three Bridges? Sorry Chris - there's no clue in the question number ... as I recall this place could be called "No Bridges". Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: JayMac on March 08, 2016, 22:17:18 Wild guess at #1...
Bedford? Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 08, 2016, 22:24:21 Wild guess at #1... Bedford? Appreciate the try ... but way out, I'm afraid. Best I can offer is "right country" ... Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: bradshaw on March 09, 2016, 13:28:00 No 7 at a wild guess
Romsey? Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: signalandtelegraph on March 10, 2016, 12:10:58 No 7 Between Dilton Marsh and Westbury?
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 10, 2016, 12:20:39 No 7 Between Dilton Marsh and Westbury? YES - that's correct .. I expected that to be the very last one to be identified. Wow! Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: JayMac on March 13, 2016, 20:45:31 Any clues for 1 and 3?
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: Chris from Nailsea on March 13, 2016, 20:51:48 1. Weston Milton?
I have a nagging doubt that I really ought to know the answer. :-[ Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 13, 2016, 21:23:06 The two remaining ones are darned hard ... I probably shouldn't have included them. Sorry - not Weston Milton.
No. 1 isn't a frequent stop for trains in those colours - they're very much the interloper there and I'll admit to being rather surprised when I found a First train for the short journey I took on it, having just travelled quite some way to the place I connected on a different TOC. No. 3 ... you've probably already scratched your heads with the "no bridges" clue I gave, and yet it's a double track line. Both pictures at the outer end of trips I took - one to give an IT course, and the other to attend a transport event. Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: Chris from Nailsea on March 13, 2016, 21:28:51 The two remaining ones are darned hard ... I probably shouldn't have included them. Sorry - not Weston Milton. No problem, grahame. ;) I've looked at that picture several times, in the past few days, and while it does have some elements of Weston Milton about it (raised concrete platform, lamp posts, etc.), I was never completely convinced. ::) Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 13, 2016, 21:47:36 And both of these stations handle between quarter and half a million passenger journeys per year ...
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: Chris from Nailsea on March 13, 2016, 21:57:52 Definitely not Weston Milton, then. ;D

Paul Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 14, 2016, 00:14:00 Could 1 be Havant? Paul Neatly fits the clues, I can see - but sorry, you haven't got it ;). Shouldn't that be 'you Havant got it' ? Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: Surrey 455 on March 14, 2016, 22:43:03 Could 1 be Havant? Paul Neatly fits the clues, I can see - but sorry, you haven't got it ;). I don't know where no.1 is but my initial impression was that this had to be a station served by a Thames valley train on the basis that it had dynamic lines. I thought only High speed and LTV FGW trains have that? However... the next photo shot in Leeds also has a train with dynamic lines so I suspect the first photo is in the same locality Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 15, 2016, 06:25:49 However... the next photo shot in Leeds also has a train with dynamic lines so I suspect the first photo is in the same locality Or the same TOC? Two pictures taken ... 10 minutes or so earlier than no.1 (of the same train) and a couple of minutes later than no. 3 (at the same station) (http://www.wellho.net/pix/helper06.jpg) (http://www.wellho.net/pix/helper07.jpg) Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: signalandtelegraph on March 16, 2016, 15:39:10 3. Leeds
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 16, 2016, 17:16:38 3. Leeds Nope, not even the right county - sorry! Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 19, 2016, 06:30:18 OK ... those two remaining are darned difficult. Anagram time ... or rather list of letters in names.
1. [' ', 'a', 'a', 'd', 'd', 'e', 'h', 'l', 'm', 'o', 'r', 't', 'u'] 3. ['a', 'a', 'b', 'c', 'e', 'e', 'h', 'r', 't', 'w'] Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: old original on March 19, 2016, 07:18:20 1 - Mauldeth Road somewhere near Manchester I think
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: JayMac on March 19, 2016, 07:26:02 3 Waterbeach
Title: Re: 12 of the best Post by: grahame on March 19, 2016, 08:25:45 Indeed - Mauldeth Road, first station on the line towards Manchester Airport; half hourly service from Northern Rail, but with additional peak hour stops by TransPennine Express. I was up there a couple of weeks back now - attending a bus event at Ardwick Green and stayed in a 'hotel' on the Wilmslow Road the night before.
And Waterbeach - first station (at the moment) to the north of Cambridge. There's an intermediate station due to be opened to serve the science park / business park area, as at present Cambridge is too far south and Waterbeach is too far north.
