Title: HST Shortage ? Post by: lbraine on September 16, 2015, 07:57:12 This mornings HST service from Maidenhead (ex-Didcot) was a 3 car Turbo.
It's been a 180 a few times over the summer - but never a Turbo Is there HST fleet issues ? Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: lbraine on September 16, 2015, 08:21:06 Forgot to add - the same happened yesterday

Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: TonyK on September 16, 2015, 16:59:15 ...Power Car being hauled to PM during the night on skates. For the inexpert - skates? Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: Chris from Nailsea on September 16, 2015, 17:39:38 From wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheelskate):
Quote A wheelskate, or wheel skate, is a device used to lift a damaged rail wheel and enable it to slide again so the train can be moved for repairs. Wheelskates are used by a variety of railroads, both passenger and freight. They enable the continued operation of rail lines that would otherwise be brought to a halt by a breakdown. I'll add it to our Coffee Shop forum Acronyms/Abbreviations page. ;) Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: a-driver on September 16, 2015, 23:13:04 ...Power Car being hauled to PM during the night on skates. For the inexpert - skates? The red item is the actual wheelskate. Has its own running wheels and enables a seized or damage wheel to be lifted clear of the rail so it can be moved normally at a maximum speed of 10mph (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/download/file.php?id=105206&sid=a82f1d33191515b99a64ea68aa139c5b) Title: Re: HST Shortage ? A problem like this would not take a set out of use as a spare power car would be utilised asap Edit note: Quote marks fixed, for clarity. CfN. Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: hoover50 on September 18, 2015, 12:37:44 A problem like this would not take a set out of use as a spare power car would be utilised asap ...unless there are no spare power cars available! With IEP now firmly on the way, how much money is likely to be spent on repairing major faults on HSTs? A power car cannot work without a gearbox, which sounds expensive. Will there be a diminishing supply of spare power cars in the run-up to the run-down of the HST fleet? Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: John R on September 19, 2015, 10:18:35 They've still got at least a couple of years to go, and given the high availability that's needed to run the existing service, I don't think there is much choice but to repair.
Title: Re: HST Shortage ? Post by: a-driver on September 19, 2015, 13:33:32 They've got to be handed back in a good state of repair as well or face a financial penalty just like National Express did when FGW took over.
Most components like gearboxes will more than likely be under warranty.
